What is Diversity?

Diversity is the state of being diverse or a range of different things.

This diagram demonstrates how diversity works as a human example using a person's unique perspective.

What is diversity of living things in an ecosystem?

The diversity of living things is an ecosystem is a variety of species or plants in an ecosystem.

This diagram explains how diversity in an ecosystem works by showing the variety of living organisms that inhabit a pond ecosystem.

Human Activites that affect the diversity of living things

  • Deforestation: is the action of clearing wide area of trees.
  • Water polllution: the presence in or introduction into an aquatic environment of a substance or thing that has harmful of poisonous effects
  • Habitat removal and Alteration: the alteration of a habitat is a change of land use or land cover that has an impact on local ecosystems, alteration can lead to the loss or removal of local ecosystems
  • Introduction of exotic species: the introduction of non-native species to an ecosystem where they are not native

How human activites are affecting the diversity of living things in ecosystems?

  • Deforestation: A forest is more than just a bunch of trees, it is a community of organisms that includes plants, animals, bacteria, fungi, and microbial life. Each of the different groups of organisms rely on each other for food and shelter and all depend on the forest as a whole for survival. Forests also contain a variety of types of soils which help make them all unique. So when humans begin the process of deforestation and cut down trees not only is there a decrease in trees but a multitude of other animals, plants, fungi, bacteria, and microbial life lose their home; leaving the organisms that once lived in the forest to die. This then leads to a decrease in ecological biodiversity, the more forests that are lost due to deforestation aid in the decrease of the diversity of living things in an ecosystem (because the forest's ecosystem is lost from the deforestation).
  • Water pollution: Water pollution affects the many forms of aquatic life (aquatic animals, aquatic plants, bacteria, aquatic protists) living in a body of water. For water pollution to occur there must be an addition of a substance, ie. pesticides, that are commonly not present in the water. Water pollution can have both positive and negative impacts on the diversity of living things in an aquatic ecosystem. Some of the negative effects are: killing off species of animals, plants and bacteria's that live in the aquatic ecosystem, the fertility rates of the animals living in the polluted aquatic ecosystem, and killing off resources that the animals, plants, and bacteria use ie. insects for food. The positive effects are: the pollution can drive away invasive species from the area, and it can increase the mutation rate of the animals and plants.
  • Habitat removal and Alteration: When habitat removal or alteration occurs it drastically affects the diversity of organisms living in the ecosystem. Most commonly when habitat removal and alteration occur it is because of bottom trawling. The process of bottom trawling is where commercial fishing company's use large nets and drag them along the sea floor to collect bottom dwelling species such as shrimp and cod.By using these nets they are not only removing the desired animals but they are also removing the small plants, algaes, and sands from the bottom layer of the body of water.
  • Introduction of exotic species: By introducing exotic species into an ecosystem it increases the risk of disease or extinction of other species that naturally live in the ecosystem. Exotic plants or animal may carry a bacteria that is harmful or infectious that can wipe out or take over the natural species.

What type of impacts are humans making on the diversity of living things in ecosystems?

  • Damage to habitat space: As humans we impact the diversity of living things in all habitats through our daily activities, land use, population numbers, and lifestyle. All these factors help to contribute to the destruction of natural habitats and the loss of living organisms in the habitat
  • Human aided extinction: Naturally extinction occurs, but more recently with human activities the rate of extinction has gone up. By aiding in the rate of extinction humans a drastically changing the diversity of living things in ecosystems, which then greatly affects us, as humans, because many of our daily tasks may we realize it or not depend on the diversity of living things.

What Can humans do to reduce their impact on the diversity of living things in an ecosystem?

Some things that humans do cannot be reversed because they have already made a lasting impact on our planet. But we can reduce our impacts on the diversity of living things by choosing more wisely about the practices and methods we use to complete construction or even daily tasks.
