The Emerging Role of the Bishop

Early Church

Bishops preserved the unit of local churches with the universal church through gathering regionally at episcopal synods. At the synods, bishops adressed questions of common concern. For example, episcopal synods were called to address a schismatic group and disagreements regarding the dating of Easter. This recongnized that bishops of local churches bore the responsibility of the universal church as well.

Second Vatican Council

Each bishop is a member of an entire body of bishops called the college of bishops who preserve the unity of the universal church. The whole college shares with the pope authority over the whole church, this is sometimes called the doctrine of episcopal collegiality.

Archdiocese of Miami

Since its creation 10 auxiliary bishops have served in the Archdiocese of Miami, two of them being Thomas Wenski and Peter Baldacchino. Wenski was appointed auxiliary bishop of Miami June 24th, 1997 while Peter Baldacchino was ordained to the episcopacy March 19, 2014.
