Hiking the Austrian Alps (Zugspitz Arena Circuit - Day 3)

This morning we awake to a spectacular panorama of mountains with the valley below covered in a white fluffy blanket of cloud.

Today we covered a lot of ground as we descended 590m from one mountain range of the Zugspitz Arena and then ascended 1005m up the other side with views back to where we had come from. The crossing involved walking across the Moos (valley) with 360 degree views of the Zugspitz Arena.

Whilst the day was the warmest so far, storm clouds were building & looking threatening by mid afternoon. We took a breather halfway up the final ascent for a refreshing Radler at a remote Alm and waited for a sun shower to pass before pushing up the final climb, reaching the Wolfrathauser Hütte for the evening just before the rain started to fall!

We were well looked after by our hostess and had the luxury of our own private room... with 2 sets of bunks.

We were treated with a local specialty of beef goulash in a tasty gravy complimented with a polenta and cheese bake and green salad. A hearty meal to recharge the depleted batteries!

The Hüttes are very well equipped with cards and a good selection of board games and we enjoyed a game of Skip Bo before climbing into our bunks for the night.
