Meet the Turtles BCEF Grant in Action at Harriet Beecher Stowe School

An educational outreach program from The Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine

In May 2017, all second graders at Harriet Beecher Stowe School participated in the educational outreach program, Meet the Turtles.

The program, delivered by representatives of the Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine, and funded through a BCEF grant, gave HBS second graders an opportunity to see and touch live turtles, enriching their science unit on reptiles.

Having learned various characteristics of reptiles in their classrooms, students were able to connect scientific knowledge with its relevance to the real world.

Presenters demonstrated differences between land and see turtles, prompting many questions from excited students eager to add to their understanding of these amazing creatures.

In the spring of 2018, through the same BCEF grant, a different outreach program by The Children’s Museum and Theater of Maine, Life of Istar, will be presented to this year’s HBS second graders. The program, about lives of whales, will enhance the science unit on marine mammals and give students an up-close experience with a life size replica of a whale.
