IN THE OLDEN DAYS, YOU HAD TO TURN YOUR HEAD SIDEWAYS TO GET IT.

But nowadays, smart devices have extra keyboards with standard emoji pictographs.

Romero Britto

Britto was born a poor boy in Brazil, but now he’s a world famous artist!

Britto’s artwork features boldly colorEd patterns with thick black outlines.

BRITTO’S GOAL AS AN ARTIST IS TO BRING A SMILE TO PEOPLE’S FACES.

Let’s mash these ideas together!

Materials

  • Black permanent marker
  • Colored markers
  • Square paper
  • Circle tracer

Step 1

Trace a huge circle with the permanent marker.

Step 2

Still using the permanent marker, draw lines radiating out from the circle to the edges of the page.

Step 3

Still using the permanent marker, draw an emoji face inside the large circle.

Pick one of these, or draw your own!

Step 4

Use colored markers to color the emoji.

Step 5

Switch back to the permanent marker to draw patterns and line designs in the background spaces.

Step 6

Use colored markers to color your background patterns and line designs. Try to avoid using yellow, in order to make sure that the emoji stands out.
