DOMINICAN ATHLETICS December 2016

On Saturday, December 10, the Dominican University department of athletics hosted more than 80 guests from Special Olympics Illinois and Community High School District 99 in Downers Grove as part of the Stars' 5th Annual Special Olympics Day. Two teams from District 99 played a game in front of a packed Igini Sports Forum in the morning before enjoying pizza with some of Dominican University's student-athletes in the Underground.

The Stars' men's basketball team is off to a 5-3 start to the season and is 3-1 in the NACC for the team's best start to a season since 2005 and best conference start since 2010.

Following the Fall, Dominican University had four student-athletes named to the NSCAA NCAA Division III Men's and Women's All-Region Teams.

Alex Rohder, the 2016 NACC Defensive Player of the Year, was voted to the NSCAA All-Central Region First Team after helping Dominican to post a 0.64 goals against average with ten shutouts.
Senior Goalkeeper was a 2nd Team All-Central Region selection after posting a NACC-best 0.68 goals against average with eight shutouts.
Junior Jonathan Arzeta was the Stars' top offensive threat, logging five goals and eight assists for a total of 18 points in 18 games and earning a nod on the NSCAA All-Central Region Second Team.
Tania Paez became the fifth player in women's soccer program history to garner all-region honors from the NSCAA, landing on the All-Central Region Third Team. Paez logged a total of 20 points with 12 assists and four goals in 20 games.
The Dominican University men's volleyball season kicks off on Friday night, January 20th, with a match against NYU. Dominican University's department of athletics is sponsoring a Faculty/Staff Appreciation night with appetizers served on the track of the Igini Sports Forum prior to the 5pm match. Following the 2016 season, senior goalkeeper Gabriel Gongora was voted a Scholar All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), landing on the Third Team, recognizing his success on the field and in the classroom. Gongora led the NACC with a 0.68 goals against average while maintaining a cumulative GPA above a 3.3 to qualify for the honor.
The River Forest Rivalry Cup series sponsored by Northwestern Mutual continues this Saturday, December 17, with Dominican University's women's basketball team traveling down Division Street to Concordia University Chicago for a 2pm tipoff. Following the fall sports, the inaugural cup series is tied at 30 points apiece.
The Dominican University men's and women's basketball teams will hold their annual Alumnae/i Basketball games on Friday, January 20th. The event is always fun with games followed by a social on the Igini Sports Forum running track. For more information, contact Coach White or Coach Johnson.
The Dominican University men's volleyball team supported university's 28th annual Adopt-a-Kid program by adopting 30 kids and physically challenged adults.
