Soil like this is "dead" when it comes to farming. If the farmers in California continue to practice improper soil management their soil could yield results like this.

Although green now, dry and cracked soil like this will ultimately fail; requiring more water and fertilizer to revive it.
The following are examples of how farmers can practice smarter soil management.

California still has the opportunity of saving itself from water depravation, but the farmers of this Golden State must improve their farming techniques, like soil management, if the state has hopes of maintaining a healthy agrarian society.
