Hebrews A Bible Study

The Supremacy of Jesus

Hebrews 1:2-3 NIV

"...in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven."

Jesus is greater than the angels.

Who are angels?

  • ○ Heb. 1:14 - ministering spirits to Christians
  • ○ Psa. 91:11 - protectors
  • ○ Psa. 103:20; 148:2; Isa. 6:1-6; Rev. 7:11 - worshippers of God
  • ○ Matt. 18:10 - protectors of the little ones
  • ○ Matt. 25:41 - There are bad angels (have choice to follow God or rebel). And there are consequences to the disobedience of angels (2 Peter 2:4; Jude 1:6).
  • ○ Mark 13:27 - gathers the elect at the end of time
  • ○ Luke 2:8; John 20:12 - proclaimers of good news (Jesus is here!)
  • ○ 1 Cor. 6:3; 1 Peter 1:12 - Humans have more authority, a more privileged position.
  • ○ Col. 2:18 - not to be worshipped
  • ○ Heb. 2:5 - Angels have less authority than Jesus.
  • ○ Heb. 2:16 - Jesus didn't come to save angels.
  • ○ Heb. 13:2 - can take on different disguises as they interact with humans

Hebrews 2:8 NIV

"In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him."

the "already - not yet" concept

Jesus has won the victory and is enforcing his victory on the earth. (See also Hebrews 10:14)

Hebrews 2:17-18 NIV "For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted."

Fix your thoughts on Jesus

Read Hebrews 3:1 and Hebrews 12:2

Is Jesus supreme in your life? It's one thing to believe the truth of Jesus' supremacy. It's another thing to "make him supreme" in your life. You can do this by fixing your thoughts and eyes on him.

Jesus is Greater Than...

  • Jesus is greater than the prophets.1:1–3
  • Jesus is greater than the angels.1:4–14; 2:5
  • Jesus is greater than Moses.3:1–6
  • Jesus is greater than Joshua.4:6–11
  • Jesus is greater than the Aaronic high priests.5:1–10; 7:26–8:2
  • Jesus is greater than the Levitical priests.6:20–7:25
  • Jesus as the high priest in the order of Melchizedek is greater than Abraham.7:1–10
  • Jesus’ ministry is greater than the tabernacle ministry.8:3–6; 9:1–28
  • Jesus’ new covenant is greater than the old covenant.8:7–13
  • Jesus’ sacrifice is greater than the OT sacrifices.10:1–14
  • Experiencing Jesus is greater than the experience on Mount Sinai.12:18–24

What is the point?

Hebrews 7:26 - "Such a high priest meets our need–one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens."

Hebrews 10:10 - "And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all."

Hebrews 10:12-14 - "But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God. Since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool, because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy."

Applying the Supremacy of Jesus to our Lives

Because of Jesus' sacrifice and high priestly role… (Heb. 10:19-25)

  • Draw near
  • Hold unswervingly to hope
  • Consider how to spur one another on…
  • Don't give up meeting together.
  • Encourage one another
Faith - Hebrews 11

What is faith?

  • Being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see (Heb. 11:1)
  • Wholeheartedly responding to God - Heb. 11:4 (Abel's worship)
  • "Without faith it's impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him" (Heb. 11:6 - NIV).
  • Hearing and obeying (Noah and Abraham) - Heb. 11:7-8
  • Acting out / Living out the promise before you see it (Heb. 11:13). How? Living out incredible thanksgiving before the fulfillment comes. How? Determine not to accuse God, not to get into anxiety in "the waiting for fulfillment" time.

Notice that each of the heroes of faith did something. Faith is active. "By faith… Abraham, Moses, Rahab [did something].

Faith determines earthly decisions by heavenly realities. Heb. 11:15-16, 25-26; Col. 3:1-4

Read Hebrews 12:1-3. What is the race that God has marked out for you?

Hebrews 12:4-13

Undisciplined people will fall out of the race. They will not persevere. God's goal is that you run the race of faith marked out for you.

Hebrews 12:11-13 - "No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. “Make level paths for your feet,” so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed" (NIV).

Hebrews 13

Jesus' supremacy and his undying love should make a big difference in how we treat each other (fellow brothers, strangers, men / women, prisoners).

in how we treat material possessions / money

in how we treat leaders

in how we treat teaching / doctrine
