Intent: Knowledge, skills and the National Curriculum

Our approach to the Computing curriculum is through a topic based approach underpinned by the HCAT accelerated learning approach to teaching and learning.

The key concepts, principles and themes have been developed from the National Curriculum into a range of progressive knowledge and skills that are vital for children to explore. At Mapplewell Primary School we believe it is important to ensure our pupils are using software correctly and that these basic skills are embedded from a young age.

The progressive document for Computing allows teachers to see what these vital skills are so our pupils can confidently use a software of their choice later on in their school journey. Coding is also taught throughout school ensuring that our pupils develop their understanding of algorithms and programming.

Alongside this there are opportunities for our pupils to learn about E-Safety and explore different uses of technology in the wider world.

The computing knowledge and skills are taught covering 5 main areas:

Algorithms and Programming, Organising and Searching (Using the internet), Uses of Technology, Data Retrieving and Organising, E-Safety and Responsibility.

The Computing Curriculum we offer is designed to meet the needs of all our pupils. It is rich, varied, imaginative and ambitious and meets the needs of individual learners. It can be easily adapted for pupils with additional needs.

Implementation : Accelerated Learning

Computing is not taught discreetly, but is embedded across the whole curriculum and permeates many subjects, such as Literacy, Geography and Art. The Computing curriculum is rich and varied and provides our pupils with the skills required for life in the 21st Century.

The Accelerated Learning Cycle, based on the work of Alastair Smith, is applied in all lessons. It stems from the idea of a supportive and challenging learning environment. The cycle has active engagement through multi-sensory learning, encourages the demonstration of learning in a variety of ways and the consolidation of learning.

A gather, skills apply approach to planning and delivery of lessons if taken across school to ensure our pupils develop a deep understanding of specific skills and are able to apply these in a range of situations.

Impact: Formative and Summative Assessment

Formative assessment is ongoing throughout each lesson. It judges progress and enables teachers to make flexible adaptions to their planned teaching.

Through this regular ongoing assessment, tasks are matched to the ability of each pupil through differentiated activities or adult suport, providing a level of challenge that is stimulating for pupils and questioning skills.

INCERTS is used as a summative assessment tool to asses Foundation subjects. The knowledge and skills based curriculum is regularly highlighted to identify any gaps or misconceptions to be addressed or passed onto the following teachers.
