The Documentary

In 2016 President Barack Obama visited Cuba taking an unprecedented step towards thawing out one of the last remnants of the cold war. This opened the door for many U.S. citizens to travel to Cuba and many Cuban nationals to return home for the first time. However after the election of President Donald Trump that window of opportunity became uncertain. Through the lens of Cuban Hip Hop “Candela: Hip Hop esta vivo en Cuba” captures an authentic perspective of what this unique moment in time meant to Cuban people.

This project brought together artists from the United States & Cuba in a spirit of collaboration. "Hip Hop Esta Vivo en Cuba: Vol. 1" is a collection of 15 original songs recorded over 13 days during the 12th annual Cuban hip hop symposium. The album offers an eclectic mix of artists, sounds and themes and supports the film's narrative that cuban hip hop can be part a global movement for change.
