Honoring all who served Veterans Day 2018

This Veterans Day, I encourage you to set aside a few moments to remember and honor those who have served our country in the Armed Forces. I personally want our veterans and active service men and women, as well as their families, to know how much we appreciate their service and sacrifices for the freedoms we all enjoy.

Local Efforts

I recently had the chance to visit with one of the founders of Central Oregon Veterans Ranch, Col. Ron Ford. His passion and dedication to supporting local veterans is inspiring. After talking with Ford, I was compelled to learn more about the organizations in our community that serve veterans — like Central Oregon Veterans Outreach and Central Oregon Veterans Ranch, to name just two — and to learn more about our own staff who have served our country in the Armed Forces.

We are fortunate to work alongside dozens of amazing individuals who are not only our friends and coworkers, but are also honored veterans.

To that end, I want to acknowledge our staff members who are also veterans. These staff members served our country and now serve our students and families as team member of Bend-La Pine Schools. I applaud your dedication - thank you for your service, as you are truly public servants.

I hope you will take a moment to read the following short profiles about three of our veteran staff members.

These are just a few of the many veterans who work in our schools. We are proud of their service - to our country and to our schools.

Many of our schools are hosting events to recognize Veterans Day - offering free lunch to veterans, hosting assemblies and special recognition for veterans. Some students and staff members are even writing belated birthday cards and letters of thanks to Bend's Bob Maxwell, who at 98 is the oldest living Medal of Honor recipient alive today. We hope that these gestures will help him feel appreciated and honored.

Robert "Bob" Maxwell is an honorary Bend Senior High Graduate with the Class of 2011 and a Medal of Honor recipient. Mail letters to: Bob Maxwell, Aspen Ridge Retirement #101, 1010 Purcell Blvd., Bend, OR 97701

I hope you'll join me in showing gratitude to all of the veterans that we are lucky enough to work alongside each and every day by participating in one of our many school-wide events, attending a local Veterans Day parade, flying the flag or simply saying "thank you."

I appreciate the service of all of our staff members, as we work together to support our students.
