Finding Your Personal Legend By: Mackenzi White

Thesis: Finding your Personal Legend is no simple task The works of Romeo and Juliet, the film, The Wizard of Oz, and Plato's Cave relate to Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist by showing that everyone needs help to find answers.

Detail #1: The allegory of The Cave, has a way of turning things around and making you think to see a different way or perspective. This process happens throughout The Alchemist. The text says, " Thinking about that for a moment, he realized it could be another way around: that it was he who had become accustomed to their schedule." (Coelho 6)

Detail #2: In the major film, The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy has 3 helpers, much like Santiago having helpers throughout his quest. For example, Santiago sees the gypsy woman, Melchizedek, and and the alchemist. Melchizedek says to Santiago, " And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it." (Coelho 24)

Detail #3: Romeo and Juliet was the result of finding your Personal Legend. Romeo and Juliet were meant to meet each other much like Fatima and Santiago. For example, Fatima says to Santiago, " You've told me about your dreams, and the old king and your treasure. And you've told me about omens. So now, I fear nothing, because it was those omens that brought you to me. And I am a part of your dream, a part of your Personal Legend, as you call it." (Coelho 100)

Conclusion: To achieve your Personal Legend, you must have help, and to do so you need a new perspective, some helpers, and the realization from someone else.
