Youth Commissioner Media Support how to best engage with people, stay safe, and anything else you need to know about communications throughout #youshape.

Remember the Key Messages

  • Youth Shaped Scouting isn't a new concept!
  • We’re a movement; we need to keep moving
  • It’s about your attitude, not age!
  • People are already doing it
  • The importance of partnership
Live Streams - a great way to engage younger audiences. We found it better to keep it short & sweet. When you're on the train to work, you don't want to watch a 20 minute video. Won't someone think of the data!

Use the Hashtag

#YouShape is one of your most useful resources: it shows you what everyone else is doing! Use it to get ideas, collaborate with other volunteers, or reach out for support!

Whenever you share something online using #YouShape, our comms & media teams can find you, and share how awesome you're being! Don't forget to tag us in your photos too (@HPKentish, @ThompsonTravels, @JagzBharth, @TRBell_, @JackBettam) - It saves you valuable characters, and gets #YouShape spread further!

Speak Up!

‘Scouts Speak Up’ Media Training courses are invaluable - speak to your line manager about attending the next one near you! If you have any questions about Speak Up, or other media training, be sure to email

Video's get better responses than photos, and photos get better responses that text based content do. The more interaction required, the better response you get. Just make sure the content you post is good quality (not shakey, and shot in HD - most phones do at least HD), and has a purpose.

Staying Safe

Keeping yourself and young people safe is key. Remember to:

  • Keep a professional distance online
  • Remember you are in a position of trust
  • Some sites have an age restriction
  • Conduct yourself in an appropriate way as you would face to face
  • Don’t engage in one-to-one conversations with young people
  • If you text or email young people, always copy in another adult
  • If you have any concerns, contact your line manager
  • Always follow the Yellow Card.
Don't forget to see all the wristbands and badges we have available! Visit Scout Shops for more information!

If you have any other questions, please see more information at Member Communications.

We wish you the best #YouShape this year, and keep sharing what you're doing on a local level!
