Using Personal Values to Set Short- and Long-Term Goals Common Exhibit for Learning Outcome #6

This was probably one of the hardest activities I've had to do. It sounds pretty dumb because it's just putting some pieces of paper into three little groups but it's much more than that. It was difficult for me because I wanted to keep a lot of the cards but when we were told to place them based on what we actually do, it was easier. I wanted to put items in most important because I wanted them to be meaningful to me but in reality I could have cared less about them. At the end of the activity I wondered why I had taken the cards out that I did. I left them in for the majority of the activity but at the end I realized that I don't pursue those qualities, I just want to.

IMPORTANT TO ME: #1

Purpose: This was IMPORTANT TO ME because I believe in having direction in your life and knowing what you want to really do with yourself. We can't just sit around and wonder "what if", we have to get up and actually make something out of ourselves.

VERY IMPORTANT TO ME: #1

Fitness: I know this is probably bad for VERY IMPORTANT TO ME but when I look at myself this is where most of my time is consumed. I work out all the time and can never seem to get enough of it. I love being the strongest and best version of myself as I can.

NOT IMPORTANT TO ME: #1

Power: I chose power for NOT IMPORTANT TO ME because I don't like the idea of having control over someone and making them how you choose them to be. I know we have to control our kids as adults or tell our workers what to do but when I say power I think of slaves. I don't believe in capture people and making them do your dirty work for you. Every one makes mistakes and we're all human. We were all created by God and should love one another.

There were several cards that were hard to discard. For example, I took away showing love, world peace, etc. I care about these things but I really didn't know what to take out. I care about showing love to others and I care about world peace but I know that no matter what I do, the world is still going to be a crazy place with too much hate and violence. I was surprised I what was most important to me which is fitness. I love fitness more than anything and I'm not so sure that should be where all of my time is. I need to consider every thing else.
