Lençóis Maranhenses National Park A magical Landscape & Kite Surf paradise

Lençóis Maranhenses

Lençóis Maranhenses, in Portuguese, literally means "bedsheets of Maranhão," the northeastern coastal state of Brazil where the national park is found.

A landscape of unique beauty. An immense desert of fine, light sands, actually tiny crystals, which begins at the sea and extends 30 kilometers inland. The combined action of the wind, waves and sea currents form intricate patterns on the dunes and keeps them in permanent movement. This is a magical place, where everything is always changing.

Natural Pools form throughout the park from January to June

The pools only appear in the rainy season from January to June, although the best time to visit Lençois park in optimal conditions is between June and September. The park lagoons are still full of water and weather conditions are very pleasant. It is when the desert becomes an oasis and blooms into life. The lagoons, which disappear in the dry season, are populated by fish which become a source of food for migratory birds. Close to the sea it is possible to view various species of sea turtles, which use the desert as a spawning ground. The headquarters of the National Park is in the small village of Atins, almost entirely inhabited by people who live by fishing in the lagoons.
