Event Recap: The Getaway Rum Experience 10 Light Street, Baltimore, MD

As die hard Caribbean Soul Trekkers, we rarely miss a chance to say "book it!" when the word getaway is mentioned. Even when the destination is somewhere local, a getaway offers an irressistable opportunity to escape from the ordinary.

The Getaway Rum Experience: Last Call was just the escape from the ordinary that we had been craving as summer drew to a close.

Enticing us with promises of rum, food, music and more, it was the perfect distraction for the impending blahs of autumn.

Here's a recap of the evening.

Held high on the urban-chic, rooftop lounge of Baltimore's 10 Light Street building, The Getaway Rum Experience brought together a vibrant crowd from Maryland, DC, Virginia and beyond eager to celebrate the rising popularity of rum CULTURE in the U.S.
This was also a party with a purpose as A portion of the event's proceeds were donated to Young Audiences of Maryland, a nonprofit organization devoted to enriching the lives and education of Maryland’s youth through educational and culturally-diverse arts programs.
In our opinion, AN evening featuring rum, music and food has all the makings of a success.
Fortunately, the Getaway Rum Experience Did not disappoint.

10 Light Street - a modern, enclosed rooftop space with dazzling views of downtown Baltimore -was as much cozy as it was spacious.

It was the perfect venue from which to wander among tasting stations before retiring to a corner nook; a plush, centralizing seating area or a modern bar.

Local rum events like these are a great place to compare and contrast domestic And interNational rums. Unlike international rum shows that can sometimes feel overwhelming to the novice rum taster, local events like these are usually more intimate and manageable.
the Getaway Rum Experience offered a well-curated selection that included local Blackwater DistillIngs Picaroon Rum (Maryland), Papas Pilar (Florida), Wicked Dolphin (Florida), Thomas TEw (Rhode Island), Ron Abuelo (Panama) and Bacardi (Puerto Rico).
Our first encounter with domestic rum, Wicked Dolphin, was surprisingly pleasant. Pot-stilled and aged in bourbon barrels, it was smooth and versatile.

Maryland-based Blackwater Distillery offered its Picaroon Rum blended into a sweet and spicey cocktail infused with jalapeño. Perfect!

Rum culture is vibrant, bold, rich and distinct. The evening's soundtrack - a blend of recorded and live music - took us through a journey of smooth soul, chill hip hop and heart-thumping soca that kept the crowd movin' to the beats all night long.

Soulful sounds from singer, songwriter, radio personality and actor Cyndiva Harcum infused a portion of the event with a soul-stirring, sultry vibe. Her voice was as smooth as the aged rums we sippeD.
DJ Smalley Goldentouch provided the perfect rum SOUNDTRACK featuring old school r&b and soca chart-toppers. At times it was Mellow, but at others it was infused with the vibrant sounds of the Caribbean and turned the party up!

Regardless of what meaning we attached to the subtitle "last call" (last call for alcohol? last call for summer?), it was clear from the expressions and chatter among friends that this had been an evening well spent.

Cheers to Rum Runners Intl, Young Audiences of Maryland, the crew from 10 Light Street and an amazing lineup of rum representatives, mixologists, caterers and musicians for putting together an event worthy of rum, our favorite spirit!

When it was finally time for "Last Call" at The Getaway Rum Experience, we - like dozens of guests - could agree it had been a memorable evening in Charm City.
