- Issue 12: Thursday 15th August 2019
Dear Students, Parents and Carers,
WELCOME TO BOOK WEEK WHERE READING IS MY SECRET POWER
This week we celebrate the wonderful world of books and reading with our annual Book Week activities.
Mr Bassi, our Teacher Librarian, has organised Author and Illustrator visits for our students to learn about creating and publishing a story.
This Friday, we will hold our Book Character Parade with all students invited to dress as their favourite book character. The parade will begin at 9.15am under the 3-6 COLA and conclude at 10.30am. Following the parade, all parents and carers are invited to visit their children’s classrooms and enjoy morning tea in the hall.
I wonder which “secret power” characters we will see appear on Friday???
CELEBRATING BIRTHDAYS AT SCHOOL
The issue of the types and quantities of food that some parents and carers bring to school to help their child’s class celebrate was discussed at our last P and C meeting. We are concerned about the excessive amounts of sugar which is contained in lolly bags and other unhealthy food. We discussed the amount of time that birthday celebrations take away from student learning. The policy is currently is being reviewed to ensure that birthday celebrations are manageable and appropriate. Once the policy is updated, a copy will be sent to all families.
Concern was raised about the amount of sugary lollies eaten by students at the school. We want our students to eat a balanced diet with limited intake of sugar. We are now considering this issue and will let you know what we will do to reduce the amount of sugary lollies in the school.
INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS AND ASSESSMENTS FOR SCHOOLS
In the past, the school has administered the ICAS tests for interested students. As the format for the test has changed to the use of an online program, we are unable to continue administering the test as we do not have the resources and do not wish to interrupt our normal classes.
ICAS is administered by a private company at a cost of $15 per test and is not a school program. The results of the ICAS tests do not carry any weight for Selective and OC placements. These placements use school based assessments and the specific test results.
FATHERS’ DAY STALL IS COMING
The P and C will hold a stall for students to purchase a gift for dads and grandads on THURSDAY AUGUST 29. Gifts range in price from $2 to $20.
Year 3 Excursion to Kamay Botany Bay National Park
On Wednesday 7th August, Year 3 went on an excursion to Kamay Botany Bay National Park. The students had a great day and enjoyed every part of the excursion. We learnt about the Dharawal Culture from the National Park Rangers and looked at preserved specimens of native animals that lived in the area. The three classes were matched up with a ranger and participated in the following three activities : -
1) visited sites along the Monument track to reflect on the story of the encounter between the Dharawal People, James Cook and the crew of the Endeavour.
2) took a walk along the Burrawang track and Banks Solander track to discover how Aboriginal people lived in this country before the British colonisation. Students even got to taste Native sarsaparilla leaves which the early settlers used to make tea and was believed to prevent them from getting scurvy.
3) visited the museum to see relics from the Endeavour, a scale model of the ship and artefacts from the meeting place.
