Anthony Lucas made the first discovery of oil in the salt domes at Spindletop.
Oil spewed for days before workers were able to cap it off.
Thousands of people poured into the small town of Beaumont hoping to cash in on the discovery of oil. Beaumont grew to a city almost overnight.
Wildcatters began to drill for oil in Texas in other locations, hoping to find the same success as Lucas. Wells were discovered in nearby Houston and further down the coast. Explorers began to look in other parts of Texas and found success there as well.
Texas was changed forever by this discovery. Most Texans had been ranchers and farmers, but oil changed all of that. Many new towns and cities developed around the wells. New businesses were created around the oil industry. Transportation improved and most of Texas was now connected by railroad tracks.
Oil continues to be a huge part of the Texas economy and brings many people to Texas looking for jobs.
