Paella party with a unique dessert cause for a celebration by my CondoSeniors STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBERT NEFF

April 28, 2017 — Paella party was a celebration by my CondoSeniors. One of my CondoSeniors and his wife is from Puerto Rico. His learned to bake from his mother and father who owned a famous bakery in Puerto Rico.

His wife reserved the clubhouse and brought the pots and pans to make a great paella dinner for fifteen with leftovers for everyone.

The highlight of night was learning the story how one recipe made the baker world renown.

Two paellas were made — meat and seafood.

The wine and stories flowed.

Big moment. The paella is ready for the rice.

More wine!

Dessert is Punch Romano.

Paella is ready!

The dessert's story is told as it was cut. During World War 2, his father was a ticket agent and sold airline rickets on the island. One morning, he was approached by a Chinese man who needed to return to his home in China. The man was a baker by trade and said, I do not have the money for a ticket but will pay you when I return. If you give me the ticket, I will give you a recipe that will make you famous. The ticket agent's wife was a baker and agreed.

Six months later the Chinese man returned, paid the debt and thanked the ticket agent. After the war the ticket agent returned to the bakery and made the recipe. The Chinese man was right. The ticket agent, now a baker, added a touch of Puerto Rico to create Punch Romano. This became the world renown and the bakery's top seller. With that he sent his kids to college.

The cake is all about the layers and how the flavors move into each other as the cake bakes.
