It’s nothing but passion.
Going to new places is a joy, the unpreparedness makes you expect some unique ventures and meeting new people comes wit it. Visiting Sal was tremendously rewarding. A year ago I took on windsurfing, the thrill of riding a board and learning new tricks won’t ever leave me at standstill. Seeing waves at Ponta Preta, watching local guys doing their magic, learning reading wind direction the right way, and facing a strong tide coming in in late afternoon’s makes you really pay respect to the nature. The ocean down there is a sports heaven.
Locals and all the other sport nerds are quite friendly, always happy to show and share their views, techniques and tips. They would take you for a dinner, show the village, tell you what to do and where to go in the evening, and what to avoid.
Santa Maria is a quite diverse place, on one hand big hotel complexes jammed with a mixture of tourists scattered along the coastline, on the other poor area with settlement of locals. I was quite lucky and met John, who showed me around those back streets, met his friend at his bar, and tasted his own made selection of punch liqueurs.
I remember him uttering a word lobster, whilst being burned by the sun. Clearly, I wasn’t sure what he meant, so he kindly explained. No matter how long you spend around, you are white and you’ll always suffer from the heat, the sun is strong and you should put on some sun cream. You get tanned after a while, but you’ll still be a lobster. He was so great and arranged barbecuing fish on a Christmas Day right on the beach. It was simple, but very cool, accompanied by Anthony, Szymon and Philipp, the night turned out perfect!
Outside of Riu hotel was always a plethora of other windsurfers and kitesurfers, a good spot to have a chat on random breaks, in between rides. John and his father were one of those people I met from the UK, both easy going and thrilled to do more.
Szymon, was an instructor at Surf Zone. I can’t say how many times he pointed me the right way. Funny, he came from Fuerteventura, also Sasha whom I met a year ago.
The list would go on…
