In this evolving technological age cyberbullying has become a major issue facing our modern society. We now witness the devastating impact of social media on young people. Cyberbullying is the act of harassing people via the internet through the misuse of various social media eg Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and emails
There are many forms of cyberbullying some of them include: fraping (posting something pretending to be someone else), Humiliation/Outing, cyber stalking (targets young people and constantly annoys them) and Fake profiles.
No Bullying.com states that 80% of teens use Facebook 54% of those teens have experienced some form of cyberbullying. More than 40% of our youth have been cyberbullied. It is vital that this number does not keep increasing, and measures to actively eradicate cyberbullying should be a priority of our political leaders and general population. Studies show that the majority of cyber bullies perpetrate their actions due to their own insecurity. 40% of bullying via internet is to its seemingly fun aspects. Yet this happens only too often.
Tips to stop cyberbullying:
1. Privacy is prevention (set privacy settings to the most secure ones)
2. Don’t respond or retaliate
3. Block the bully
4. Save and share info with trusted adults
Back in 2012 a young girl by the name of Amanda Todd was cyberbullied this innocent girl went through a living hell. A video depicting her story is posted at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ej7afkypUsc
This poor 15 year old Canadian girl was humiliated via social media and unfortunately had three suicide attempts. Despite moving several times she could not escape the psychological torment and sadly On October 10, 2012 she took her own life.
In our technological era more steps should be established to prevent another tragic event similar to Amanda’s from recurring.
Keeping contacts to just your close friends whilst rejecting all requests from strangers and strict monitoring of social media activities by adults are important steps to combat cyberbullying.
Why are people tempted to cyberbully their peers?
Most of the bullies’ have triggers which may be due to their own dysfunctional family or personal issues. They tend sometimes to repeat what is heard at home or mimic a certain type of inappropriate behaviour.
If one was ever subject to cyberbullying there are means of mitigating its impact: Saving the information, putting up defences by blocking the bully and telling a trusted adult such as: A parent, teacher, or even contacting the kids help line.
Many people agree that this needs to stop but we can’t just quit using technology. Everyone therefore needs to band together and fight off all the insults, the criticism and the bullying.
Sitting on the fence is not an option. Block the bully from various social media and report the matter to the appropriate instances. This is the best way to leave the dark side of the web.
What did I do well?
I used high modality and had lots of persuasive words in my text and I was able to make my own image without having to use Photoshop. I also managed to have a lot of information and evidence to back up each of my statements. I also formatted my webpage well because I was able to fit everything and even include a video. I did very well with the vocabulary as I used larger words that summed up four words in one.
What would I do differently if I had the task to do again?
I would use a better image and spend more time on the presentation than just spending an hour on my persuasive image and presentation. I would also take more time in research to make sure my info is 100% credible. It would have been better if I had taken more time to do the task instead of doing it later because I fell it could have been much better than it is now.
What help did I need?
I needed help structuring my text because it is a skill I have lacked for some time now. I also needed help putting the amount of information I had into my own words. I found putting it into word difficult because I had lots of information and had no clue where to begin. Luckily my dad was able to help with this.
The main thing about the art of persuasion that I have learned from this task is
Persuasion is not just convincing someone but making them truly believe what you do. I also learnt visual persuasive techniques as I had no idea what they were. The main thing I learnt was Ethos ( ethics and credibility), Pathos ( emotion) and Logos ( logic and authority)
