Cross Country (Stags)

On one day, the Stags competed in two meets on opposite sides of the country. The Stags sent part of the roster to the Connecticut College Invitational and took first place (79), while the other half of the team finished fourth at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational (111). Both meets were on Oct. 15. At the Connecticut College Invite, senior Joshua Sealand (HMC ’17) clocked in at 24:52.6 and placed fifth to lead the team. Sophomore Ben Iten (HMC ’19) led the way for the Stags at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational. He took 16th with a time of 26:22.1. CMS went 8-0 at the SCIAC multi-dual meet on Oct. 1 and is the top squad heading into the SCIAC Championships at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 at Prado Park in Chino.

Football

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football (4-1, 2-1) program suffered its first loss of the season, getting shutout 34-0 by Cal Lutheran on Saturday, Oct. 15. The Stags’ offense struggled to capitalize on several big turnovers made by the defense and special teams unit. Junior Robby Weissenfels (CMC ’18) stood out on the defensive side, blocking two extra-point conversions and a punt, while senior Jake Glasser (CMC ’17) recorded a sack. The Stags’ defense forced two fumbles, which were recovered by sophomore Jackson Zeledon (CMC ’19) and junior Brendan MacDonald (CMC ’18). CMS is tied for second place in the SCIAC standings with Cal Lutheran while Redlands and Pomona-Pitzer have unblemished conference records and are tied for first. CMS travels to Redlands on Saturday, Oct. 22 for a 7 p.m. kickoff with the opportunity to get back atop of the conference.

Golf (Athenas)

The Athenas are at the Embry Riddle Invitational on Oct. 17-18 in Prescott, Ariz., for the last tournament of the fall season. After the first day of competition, the Athenas were in second place. CMS’ spring season begins on Feb. 11-12 in the Walker Cup.

Soccer (Athenas)

The Athenas (10-5-1, 7-2-1) went 1-0-1 during the week and now stand alone in second place in the conference standings. In an Oct. 12 road match, CMS played Cal Lutheran to a 1-1 double-overtime draw. Then the Athenas capitalized on an own goal by Occidental for a 1-0 win at home on Oct. 15. Junior Morgan McCoy (CMC ’18) recorded a shutout against Oxy in her season debut, managing to snag four saves. This week, CMS plays at La Verne on Wednesday, Oct. 19, and home against Redlands on Saturday, Oct. 22.

Soccer (Stags)

The Stags (9-4-1, 7-4-1) put together a 1-0-1 week and currently sit in third place in the conference standings. Against its Sixth Street rivals, CMS tied Pomona-Pitzer 1-1 in double overtime on Oct. 10. CMS traveled to Occidental and won 2-0 on Oct. 15. Senior Mehron Abdi (CMC ’17) scored a goal in each game for CMS to lead the scoring, and junior keeper Daniel Cui (CMC ’18) held Oxy scoreless with two saves in the win. This week, the Stags host fifth-place Chapman at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, before heading to La Verne on Saturday, Oct. 22 for a 7 p.m. start.

Tennis (Stags)

At the ITA Oracle Cup on Oct. 13-16 in Surprise, Ariz., the doubles team of freshman Nikolai Parodi (CMC ’20) and senior Glenn Hull (CMC ’17) made the semifinals and took third place overall with a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (9) win over Kyle Wolfe and Jerry Jiang of Bowdoin (Maine). In singles, Parodi finished as a quarterfinalist. The spring season for CMS begins on Feb. 25 with a home match against Bates (Maine).

Volleyball

Over halfway through the conference slate of matches and CMS (18-0, 10-0) sits two games ahead of the next-closest SCIAC team in the conference standings and still has an undefeated record. CMS defeated Chapman (3-0) at home on Oct. 11, and Occidental (3-0) on the road on Oct. 15 to run its win streak to 18 on the season. Junior Margaux Arntson (CMC ’18) had an incredibly efficient game against Chapman, completing 15 out of 19 kill attempts for an outstanding .789 hitting percentage. She was perfect at the net, not committing a single error, and managed to tally a block assist. This is a big week for the Athenas, with matches against the second, third and fourth-place teams on the schedule. CMS hosts third-place La Verne on Tuesday, Oct. 18, travels to second-place Cal Lutheran on Friday, Oct. 21, and hosts fourth-place Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, Oct. 22.

Water Polo (Stags)

The Stags (9-11, 1-0) had a big week with a 14-13, come-from-behind win at NCAA Division I Loyola Marymount (Oct. 14), and 12-6 win over La Verne in the SCIAC-opener (Oct. 16). Senior attacker Ellison Taylor (CMC ’17) had three goals, two assists, and three steals in CMS’ upset victory over Loyola Marymount, and two goals, one assist and two steals against La Verne to earn SCIAC Men’s Water Polo Athlete of the Week. A rematch of the finals from last year’s SCIAC Championships is up next for CMS when it pays a visit to Whittier on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. The Stags also host Cal Lutheran on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 11 a.m.
