Sunridge Middle School September/October Newsletter

Principal's Message

Parents!

I can’t believe November is upon us! Since the beginning of school this past August, our students and teachers have been very busy in our classrooms, our gyms and athletic fields. Of all the things we’ve accomplished thus far in the school-year, making a positive connection with your child has been our top priority. And throughout all that we do, I want to thank you so much for your support!

October Events at SMS

Girls in Science

For the second year, thanks to a grant from The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Pendleton Branch on Saturday October 29, Mrs. Erwin with thirty Sunridge Middle School girls attended Girls in Science.

Girls in Science is an annual event at Eastern Oregon University that provides girls in grades 6-8 with an exciting day of hands-on STEM exploration! Hosted in collaboration by NEOAHEC and EOU, it allows students to dive headfirst into an engaging science mystery that explores topics in chemistry, biology, mathematics, and computer science

Sundridge Art Department

The Sunridge Art Department is in full creativity mode this year. We are off to a great start with creating fall zentangles and still life drawings. The students are already showing their magnificent skills and putting their creative juices to work! We would like to remind all parents and community members that our art department is always looking for donations of your old magazines, paintbrushes, canvas, paper, old vinyl records and other items that you may not be using. Please feel free to contact Mrs. Sickels with any questions or if you have something you feel might be of value for our department. Your trash may be our treasure.

Robotics

Robotics is in full swing at SMS! Five teams had their first meet of the season on October 10th at the Pendleton Convention Center.

These students are getting a programming lesson with one of our mentors, Steve Lawn.

Former SMS student, Tatum Paullus, is helping these students create team websites and electronic versions of each team’s Engineering Notebook.

Documenting a robot design on paper for the Engineering Notebook.

Referring to a diagram while contemplating the best implementation.

Busy building!

Tightening a possible robot arm?

Always trying to earn more money to fund robotics - team members running the concessions trailer at Homecoming!

September Bronc Pride

The following list of students are the Sunridge Middle School Bronc Pride Award winners for the months of September and October. Comparable to a student of the month, recipients of these special awards are either consistently modeling high expectations related to readiness, respect and responsibility, or have recently experienced recognizable growth in one or all of these areas. This is a truly remarkable honor worthy of continued recognition.
