TATE MODERN

SIMRYN GILL & ENVIRONMENT

In the afternoon we walked from Borough Market to Tate Modern where we explored the work of artist Simryn Gill in the Photography and Environment section. We used WAYS IN to explore the piece of work titled Channel #4. We reflected on the personal/subject/object/context in order to structure our responses to the work and help develop a few paragraphs of personal insights and reflections.

Simryn Gill (born 1959) is a Singapore-born artist who specializes in sculpture, photography, drawing, writing and publishing. Throughout her career, Gill has presented her art at several significant events, including Germany's Documenta art show and the Venice Biennale, and is one of Australia's most famous contemporary artists. Gill lives between Sydney, Australia, and Port Dickson, Malaysia.

These photographs show evidence of sea pollution in a small mangrove forest in Port Dickson, Malaysia, Gill’s hometown. Colourful plastic bags and other rubbish have washed up with the tides, getting stuck in branches and roots. In the black and white photographs, it can be hard to distinguish the waste among the plants. The first photo shows large cargo ships in the distance. This suggests the activities of Port Dickson’s commercial harbour are the source of the detritus. More widely, the series raises questions about the consequences of globalisation on the environment.
