Using PowerPoint to Create a Video ASYNCHRONOUS TEACHING

You may download Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus (For Faculty and Staff) here.

The purpose of this presentation is to show you how to use an existing PowerPoint presentation to record a video and share it with your students on CUNY Dropbox and/or Blackboard.

Record Your Narration Over an Existing PowerPoint Presentation

To start recording, open your PowerPoint presentation, select the slide you wish to record your voice over, and click on the Slide Show tab on the top of the screen. Then, click on Record Slide Show and start narrating.

Tips: You can start recording from the first slide and continue talking until you reach the last slide. You also have an option to record your voice over each slide individually. The latter may be a better option because it is easier to change the narration for one slide instead of re-recording the entire narration.

Note: If you are not able to see the recording options, follow this link to enable recording in PowerPoint.

View Your Recording

From the Slide Show tab, select either From Beginning or From Current Slide.

Exporting Your PowerPoint Recording as a Video File

From the File tab, select Export and click on Create a Video. Make sure that the Use Recorded Timings and Narrations option is selected.

Share Video With Your Students

CUNY Dropbox

Store the video in your free CUNY Dropbox account available to all active CUNY students, faculty, and administrative staff.

Tips: CUNY Dropbox is recommended for storing video files as they typically require more storage space.

Linking CUNY Dropbox with Blackboard

Each Blackboard (Bb) course comes with 750 MB of storage. If you plan on creating a large number of videos, we do not recommend storing them directly on Bb because of its limited storage capacity. You have an option of linking your CUNY Dropbox with Blackboard.

Step 1. Share Video from CUNY Dropbox

a) Check the square next to the video and click on Share.

b) At the bottom of the window, click on Create Link and then on Copy Link.

Step 2. Paste the link copied in the previous step into Blackboard

a ) From the Content area, select Build Content, and then Web Link.

b) Paste the link to the video copied in the Step 1 in the second box (under URL) and click on Submit.

The most successful educational videos are no more than 15 min long as our natural ability to hold attention declines after that time. Also consider combining videos with Bb quizzes and tests.
