High Cascades 100 TECH GUIDE 2022

Established in 2009

2021 Loop/2022 course will be similar and announced in June or as the snow melts above 5K feet

Based on your' ability to take on a challenge without support, it would not be possible to "Race" 100 miles.

The community of Bend, Oregon, is unique in so many ways, from endless singletrack and beer to landscapes that are hard to beat. Finishing what you start is challenging in our busy world of demands, but somehow we all make it happen. Riding your way to a podium or Sub 10Hrs, or Sub 12, 13,14, or DFL, is what it is all about the third Saturday in July each year, and we hope you will join us.

Thank you for the support

FAQ

Rider Know before you go list!

The High Cascades 100 is an endurance MTB event established in 2009! Your journey or ride from Bend "Rules of the road" after 5:30 am when we depart as a mass start event. We aim to keep the post-event trauma under 3 riders!

Medical

Urgent Care support on the Westside of Bend LINK

We hire out Adventure Medics as our A-Team for the High Cascades 100 and have local Deschutes Ares radio support! If you encounter someone on trail hurt, please remember to look at their race plate for the rider's race number.

Our common injuries that require post-event treatment is 4 to go to Urgent Care, and six if the temperatures are over 90 degrees. See the venue map online for High Lakes Urgent care on the west side of Bend.

How Hard is the Event?

That depends, over the history of this event, the average finisher rate has been about 89%. The toughest part is handling all the fantastic trails that can be hard on the body over time while staying hydrated. Pacing yourself and staying hydrated are very important to make it to the finish. 2018's fastest time for the happy valley loop was 7:17 hrs Bryan Lewis and Larissa Connors at 8:15 for the fastest times ever! These fast times will be in play in 2021 with a hopeful return to Happy Valley per snow conditions. 2019 saw Jacob Rathe 7:41 edge out two-time champ, Chris Jones, by 1 minute with Chase Edwards taking the 2019 Women's Title in 9:25 for the Mt Bachelor Loop. The Record for the Mt Bachelor loop for the women is Serena Bishop Gordon in 8:32. 2020 was an insane 85 mile loop of Lava including a wall of lava on Kwohl Butte!

Your pace is dependent on so many things, including soil moisture, actual trails in the event and your ability to ride Bend Trails or learn quickly that the center of the trail is your friend and straying outside the center can cause you problems. Average 7.5 MPH and you can finish.

This is not an easy event by any means but you can succeed with proper training and a positive mindset. With 25+ breweries in town if you DNF you have a good back up plan including our friends and main beer support at 10 Barrel Brewing.

We could not produce and do this event without your support and the support of our sponsors, volunteers, and crew of Mudslinger Events. Please take the time to thank the volunteers and also give back to our fundraising group and local trail advocacy group COTA, the Central Oregon Trail Alliance. Consider registering for the "racing for COTA category" while spots exist with 100% of those entries donated back and also staying at Mt Bachelor Village for the 10% giveback. Everyone that does sign up has the option to become a fundraiser for COTA.

Training

Rolling in the early am

We have partners in training that live and ride the Bend, Oregon Trails so much that not taking on some advice from one of them would be tragic. We included their bio and contact below to take your fitness to the next level. To keep that 88% finisher rate and hope you will plan accordingly, and go for it!

Also, Blog Post from local Dakota Gale and Traipsing About. First time ever racing in 2017, nailed his Sub 10 HR Goal, and Vegan Diet to boot!

Mechanical Support

Mechanics from Sagebrush Cycles will be there to keep the wheels rolling, and the rest is up to you. Make sure to ship your bike to arrive no later than Monday the week of the event. James and his crew dominate this event and are among the critical factors at maintaining that 89% finisher rate. We have a shipping option available with a bike build and mini tune-up/safety check for 125.00 available through registration. Mechanical support in 2020 will be located at the end of the aid station past your drop bags and as you exit. Lube will be available, and we will sanitize between each use. Remember not to remove your face covering until you have left the aid station and drop zone area. Keep Rolling with Sagebrush Cycles of Bend!

New Location: info@sagebrushcycles.com Sagebrush Cycles Skjersaa’s (pronounced “Sheershaws”345 SW Century Dr Ste 100 Bend, OR 97702 (541) 389-4224 / (541) 382-2154

Where is everything at?

The Bend area can be confusing. The venue map on the website can help quite a bit.

Please do not warm up before the race when it is not light unless you have a light on your bike! Please ride Rules of the Road from Bend no earlier than 5:30 to Mile 9 off of rd 41! SPECTATORS HEADING TO WANOGA SNOW PARK DO NOT LEAVE BEND UNTIL AFTER 6 AM. YOUR RIDER WILL BE DQ'D IF SO AS THE HWY IS A DANGEROUS PLACE WITH EXTRA CARS ON THE ROAD THAT DO NOT NEED TO BE PRESENT.

Rd 41 is located just west of Bend on Century Drive 5 miles directly across from the Forest Service Welcome Center and a left-hand turn.

Key to finishing well

Training! Duh and Hydration and Smiling. Mental toughness for mile 32-53 for the 5-7 MPH and something left in the tank from mile 70 on

How is the course marked?

It takes 40 hrs to mark the 100-mile loop, with 90% of the course being marked by Wednesday the week of the event. Pink arrows and Multicolored red striped, and Pink or orange ribbons mark the way. A key point of multiple ribbons will be placed on the side of the turn with pink arrows in 90% of all turns on the opposite side of the corner. For example, we would put an arrow on the right, pointing left!

Also, in some areas, we use a bright yellow wrong way X that says NO. The course is open to all recreational traffic, so be careful and always download the GPX file when it becomes available. Major Trails will have laminated signs with the trail name and distance also. Please do not touch the signs or move anything as riders can become lost or disorientated in the heat of the day. The best plan if you have never been to this event is to follow a local Bend rider. We over mark the course, but it is your responsibility not to overcook a corner or play "follow the leader" and go off route.

Does the event fill?

Most years it does and we may have a spot late so text me or e-mail me at mike@mudslingerevents.com for available space.

Special Notice

We will be holding five spots for top overall NUE series through July 10th. So if you are in the top 5 this season heading into High Cascades 100 overall in Open Men, Open Women, 50+ Men, or SS, you will have a spot waiting. This way, if the race fills, you can still come with all your hard work! Also, we will always have five places for women who want to race when the event fills. With a much higher than average women participation, we appreciate all of your efforts. We may even have a few spots on the waitlist with all the deferrals, so check back on the reg link.

Does the High Cascades 100 allow outside support?

YES in 2021 at Aid 1 mile 23 and Water and HEED refill mile 33. THAT'S IT! We cant add 200 cars driving around in a heavy recreational area to the other spots! Your rider will be disqualified if receiving support in any other areas except these two locations.

NO OUTSIDE SUPPORT ON COURSE! Meaning to please get your Nonporous drop bag and water at the aid station No mid-race pacing! Sure you may follow a stranger up a hill but please do not have Joe or Mary meet you and tow you around at mile 50. Joe and Mary are both outstanding individuals, but a bit crazy sometimes.

NO Outside support vehicles are allowed to leave Bend until 6:00 am 30 minutes after we start including volunteers to provide a safe start for the riders. Any car on the road following the riders outside of official vehicles will result in a 1hr time penalty to the rider.

If you want to support your rider, maybe you can volunteer…we need your help and you get a great meal and shirt! volunteer@mudslingerevents.com

Medical Support

Sagebrush Cycles!

We have advanced first aid available on course with Adventure Medics at most aid stations and the finish, including radio communication by the ARES radio group at each checkpoint, we will have you covered. Being that this course is extensive, it will take quite some time to get to you if you are seriously injured and with this knowledge, please take care of each other on the course and make sure to alert aid station personnel if someone is hurt and needs assistance.NO motos are allowed unless we need to dispatch local Search and Rescue and this can take 30 minutes to get ready to leave from Bend combined with travel time to where you are. What this means that this is a severe endeavor on your part to maintain control of your bike and do what you can to come back safe. While we have had some injuries such as broken collarbones and puncture wounds and the typical loss of skin or concussion, neck trauma, and or an IV from dehydration and would like to leave it at that or better said the average is 2-5 injuries requiring medical attention beyond what we can do in the field. Over my 25 years of putting events/races, I have rarely had to call for assistance but will do everything in my power to get medical support to you quickly. With all other recreation occurring in the forest from multiple user groups, you can expect a 2hr to 3hr time to have medical personal arrive if you are seriously hurt.

Is neutral mechanical support available?

YES, Sagebrush Cycles with five mechanics spread out on the course as the final stop at the end of the aid station in 2021. We excellent service to keep you rolling. We will lube your chain with lube adjust derailleurs, and assist the best of our ability. If, by chance, you do need a repair that requires payment, please give the mechanic your race number and name and stop by Sunday to the shop that fixed your bike and settle up with them for the part allocated to complete your journey. In addition to service, we will have some tubes and a tire or two at each aid area, but make sure to store some rubber patches/a tube, a CO2, or other small parts in your drop bags to ensure your bike makes it to the finish line.

What are the cutoff times for this event? How does the start work?

Race Starts and Finishes

Join NOW! Thank you for the incredible support!

The ride begins with your 85.00 Transponder attached to your fork that you should have received the day prior at Sagebrush Cycles for rules of the road socially distanced ride from Bend after 5:30 am! We start from the Athletic Club Of Bend. You may only park at the Athletic Club of Bend from 4:30-5:45 am and after 1 pm Saturday!

Use your zip ties and dont lose it! $85.00 is the cost if you lose it and with three timing points on course we should have some great results. Please return to Sagebrush Cycles if you DNF and or do not remove it at a Hard Cut off point.

The Race ends at the Athletic Club of Bend! Food and more await you including your finisher Growler!

Finish!

Please have your timing chip removed and grab a single use water and head out. Nice work

We want everyone to finish! Many elements are in play. Heat and hydration and staying upright, to name a few!

2021 Route Cut off's (the times below are when you must have left the aid stations) No exception. We finished 90.5% in 2021! 2022 will be just as sweet of a course

All you need! LINK

9:30 am mile TBD Wanoga Aid 1 (We suggest arriving before 9 am if you want to finish) Baring a mechanical 98% make it to Aid 1 in time

Time: TBD Mile TBD Aid 3 at TBD

SPECIAL NOTICE about time cutoffs

We want everyone to finish, and many elements are in play. Heat and hydration and staying upright, to name a few!

Out of the 10-15% that do not finish, we have 1% or less that end up being very irrational, unwilling to leave the course, not cool at all with our sweeps who are tracking progress, and taking their time to help the riders along the route. We understand your passion and sincerely appreciate your efforts. Please respect the cutoff times listed above and know that you must meet those to continue through to the finish. Riders not making the cut will have the timing chip removed and either be given transport back to Bend from our friends at Cog Wild and or in some cases, the access to Century Drive or Skyliners equals a 10 mile mostly downhill roll back to family and friends. If you do this please return the chip and please stay tuned for phone numbers to contact so we know exactly where you are.

If you miss a cut-off time: We set the cut-offs, so you are not riding in the dark, and we need to know your plate number to report to the aid captain. If you continue to ride on the course, you will be on your own to allow the sweeps and course to be cleared. If you do continue to ride and further risk injury, dehydration to our sweep riders, we need to take your plate and wish you farewell. You could run out of water or worse. Thank you for your understanding.

START TIME IS 5:30 am from the lower parking lot of the Athletic Club of Bend

While things do change year to year depending on the actual course, a time of 1 pm usually at 50-55 miles is where the hard cut halfway will be established, to ensure your safety the rest of the way to the finish line. The average speed needed is about 7.5-8mph on average to make the cut-off and be well on your way to finishing without getting caught in the dark. It may be light outside, the forest is much darker late in the day, and Mudslinger Events will not compromise any participant's safety in regards to cut-off times.

Just average 7.5 mph, and all you can finish this epic event as 88% have done.

Riding in Bend

NO Littering. If you can believe it in 2018, someone dropped a gel pack on the ground, and a cyclist not associated with the event asked them to pick it up, and they said, "I paid to do this" Meaning litter….WTF! This has to be rare, but in 2018 we did find over 30 wrappers and mainly on an open bumpy road before Tumalo ridge. Slam that gel or better yet use a gel flask and pack it out.

Anyone found tossing litter on course will be disqualified immediately! You have every opportunity to drop your litter at aid stations.

Keep Single Track single.

Most vegetation is fragile and very sensitive to trampling. When passing others, please allow the lead rider to move over when safe and try to keep the singletrack single. Use passing lanes whenever possible. When you stop for a break, please remove your bike from the trail so others can pass without being forced to go off the singletrack

Some trails can be crowded.

Runners, dog walkers, families, tour groups, racers, equestrians, and recreational cyclists all share the same trails. Please be courteous to other users, and extend a friendly nod or "hello" when passing. You are not any more entitled to use these trails than anyone else even though it's a race, please behave and be friendly regardless of what the other trail users are doing. Especially true during a long descent where blind corners and sharp turns exist.

Clothing Policy

Any clothing left over after Sunday will be donated to Junior racing in Oregon and washed, with no exceptions. All leftover clothing will be placed on one side of the race event trailer after the event Saturday, and if not picked up by Sunday at 9 am will be taken back to my house. I will be on-site from 8 am to 9 am Sunday am, prior to moving the enclosed trailer.

Awards

7pm Awards Growler and award ceremony Athletic Club of Bend.

Open Men, Open Women, Singlespeed men, Cyldesdales 200+, 40-49 Men and 40-49 Women 50-59 Masters Men and 50+ Masters women and 60+ Super Masters Men. We will expand to 60+ Super Masters Women and even 70+ Extreme Masters Men once we have 4 or 5 participate and finish in the event. We wanted to update this for 2022 due to a few dedicated riders emailing us.

We don’t have 60+ Super Masters Women Yet. We first need a 60+ women to finish and also have 5 or more participants to make a category. This is the most attended women’s 100-mile endurance event in the nation as a percentage of the field. We do have a big women's

3000.00 in Cash to the top riders, equal payout top 5 men and women 500,400,300,200,100 men and women. Awards 3 deep and amazing prizes for those who attend.

Camping

(It is a 20-minute drive to the start if you are camping, back to town) Please remember if we are in a fire restriction no fires and I will inform you if this is the situation.

Litter

Once again NO Littering or dropping gel packs. If you pull packs or anything out of one pocket, put the leftover in your garbage pocket and empty at the aid stations. I will DISQUALIFY you if this happens and we know when no effort is made to stow your garbage. We do have gel flasks, need to do a complete inventory, but will be able to get you going and keep you going, so no tops of gel packets, or wrappers….please!

The N.U.E series (National Ultra Endurance Series) is one way to go the distance.

Thanks to all of you and your families!
