What's Happening in 8th Grade This Week???

English Language Arts

  • Read 180 (Romberg/Durrence): In READ 180, we will begin Workshop 8- “Follow the Money.” In whole and small group, we will analyze anchor videos, collect vocabulary for our personal “word banks,” review central ideas and details, and how to summarize text. In independent reading, scholars will read books on their Lexile level from the READ 180 library and complete reading logs. In APP, scholars will independently work on selected APP segments to close learning gaps and complete APP logs. Scholars should have completed a total of 3 segments, 3 novels, and 3 Ereads by November 21st.
  • 8th Grade ELA (Hills): This week in 8th Grade ELA, scholars will begin diving into Unit 3: Take a Stand! In this unit, we will examine informational texts that requires scholars to evaluate both sides of a debate and then take a stand and choose the side that exhibits the best factual and relevant evidence to persuade their audience. For the culminating summative assessment for Unit 3, scholars will be involved in a debate against one of their peers where they will defend their opinion on a hot button topic facing teenagers in the world today. (Ex: Does social media do more harm than good for teenagers? Should uniforms be required to be worn by all scholars? Who has it easier in today's society, boys or girls?)
  • 9th Grade Lit & Comp (Hills/Romberg): This week we will examine the historical, Scottsboro Boys Trial and compare its relation to To Kill a Mockingbird. Scholars will be able to draw allusions to this trial and the one that Tom Robinson is enduring in To Kill a Mockingbird. As a reminder, Reading Check #5 is due at the beginning of class on Thursday. Also due at the beginning of class on Thursday, is the Social Issues Project. We will begin presenting these projects starting on Thursday. Please check Google Classroom for the answers to any questions that you have concerning the project.
Our INCREDIBLE 8th Grade ELA Team!!!

Science

  • 8th Grade Science (Herndon/Winkworth/Beasley, Joyner): The central focus of this learning segment is to develop the understanding of the different unseen forces that influence our lives. Scholars will learn how static electricity works and how we use it to affect our lives. Scholars will learn how to transfer electrons through conduction, friction, and induction. Scholars will learn how to classify different materials as conductors or insulators of electricity. These skills will establish the basic principles of how to create and use electromagnets, generators, and motors, which students will build in the future lessons.
  • Herndon's Tutorial: Thursday's 3:35-4:30

Social Studies:

  • 8th Grade Georgia Studies (Sanchez/Styron/Beasley/Joyner): This week we begin a new unit on Westward Expansion. Scholars will learn who the Creek and Cherokee people were. Scholars will research both cultures, and study how they lived their life here in Georgia. Scholars will use the GPB virtual field trip platform to learn more about each tribe. We will also begin to look at how and why both groups were removed from Georgia.
Georgia History ROCKS!!!

  • 8th Grade Math (Meeks/Carver/Beasley/ Durrence): Scholars will complete unit three standards this week. They will be exploring volume with cylinders, spheres, and cones. Their unit three exam will be November 20 and 21st.
