Peter Warren Dedicated Reporter. Thoughtful Writer. Passionate Journalist.

My name is Peter Warren and I am a journalist with a passion for storytelling, research and reporting.

I am currently a general assignment reporter for the Houston Chronicle, writing quick-turn news stories and features while also working on enterprise stories. I spent four months as the interim space reporter covering NASA and the aerospace industry in Houston while the full-time reporter was on maternity leave. I have also had mini-beats covering U.S. Postal Service mail delays the 2024 ICC T20 Men’s World Cup.

Prior to moving to Houston, I worked in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex for two years as a sports reporter. I freelanced for the Dallas Morning News, covering the Dallas Stars, Dallas Wings, tennis and more. I also worked for On3 Sports and the XFL as the league’s features writer.

My freelance work has appeared in Texas Highways Magazine, the Star Tribune, DMagazine.com, Bowlers Journal International, Billiards Digest, DallasStars.com and other outlets.

In June 2021, I graduated from Northwestern University with degrees in journalism and history. I won the 2020 Society of Professional Journalists National Mark of Excellence Award winner for Sports Column Writing and won back-to-back Society of Professional Journalists Region 5 Mark of Excellence Awards in Sports Writing, Newspapers.

Houston Chronicle

November 2023-Present

I am a general assignment reporter on the Surge Team, where I work on a variety of quick-turn, enterprise and feature stories. For four months in 2024, I also filled in as the interim space reporter covering NASA and the aerospace industry in Texas. I have also covered multiple mini-beats, including U.S. Postal Service mail delays and the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

I also pitch in on newsroom-wide projects such as election and hurricane coverage. My live feeds from the field during and after Hurricane Beryl received high praise from editors and fellow reporters.

XFL

January 2023-November 2023

A cold email to the XFL led to a role covering the entire league as a features reporter for the league's website. I followed all eight teams while writing features, profiles and explainers that gave readers a better understanding of the league and its unique dynamic. Leadership also trusted me to provide guidance and ideas on long-term planning.

Bowlers Journal International and Billiards Digest

March 2022-Present

I write longform magazine profiles and features for two leading magazines in the bowling and billiards communities. These stories include going on reporting trips to places such as Las Vegas, New Orleans and Wichita.

Dallas Morning News

August 2021-November 2023

I started working as a freelancer for the Dallas Morning News' top-notch sports department by helping out with its high school football coverage, providing live stats and writing short recaps throughout the 2021 season. I also pitched other stories and was assigned to cover other sporting events.

I then covered the Dallas Wings throughout the 2022 season, establishing myself as a leader on the beat. I was a fixture at games and practices as I worked to build relationships with players and coaches to produce better stories.

At the end of 2022, I picked up the Dallas Stars beat on an interim basis. I stayed in the role until a hiring freeze at the newspaper shrunk the freelance budget.

In addition to covering those beats, I did additional work covering others teams, athletes and sporting events.

Freelancer for Various Publications

2019

I have written freelance stories for multiple publications over the years, including Texas Highways Magazine, DallasStars.com and DMagazine.com.

On3 Sports

September 2021-October 2023

I was one of the first two desk writers hired by On3 to cover the college recruiting space in the fall of 2021. I helped the company further expand its footprint in the college sports media space through writing stories, producing social media copy and collaborating with others to help elevate the company to the top of the business.

After helping to get the recruiting team off the ground, I later joined the national college sports desk and worked with them.

Star Tribune

January 2021-March 2021

I was a metro intern with the Star Tribune in Minneapolis during the winter of 2021. I immediately became an important member of the metro reporting team, covering all different type of events, from schools reopening to crime briefs. I ended with two A1 stories and 10 stories that were the main display on the metro section cover page.
