What We're Learning
Math
We're beginning our unit on division. Students will learn how to interpret remainders, use arrays to divide whole numbers, estimate quotients using compatible numbers (see video below to learn about compatible numbers), and divide using repeated subtraction.
Science
We're learning about the different forms of energy - Mechanical, Electrical, Light, Thermal, and Sound (MELTS). Students will choose an item in the classroom and create a mini-poster that shows the type of energy the item uses, the type of energy the item produces, and how the energy changes.
Social Studies
We're learning about the accomplishments of significant empresarios (Moses Austin, Martin de Leon) and their impact on the settlement of Texas. We're also learning different missions and their impact on Texas history. Students will complete their comic-strip representing the events that occurred at Mission San Saba.
Classroom News
Report cards were distributed on Friday. Please sign and return the report card envelope. You may keep the report card for your records.
Homework was sent home on Friday and is due this Thursday. Please make sure your child is working on this throughout the week. There are two division problems (Monday #3 and Tuesday #3) that I asked the students to omit as we're just now beginning our division unit. Students are welcome to solve the problems but they're not required. Also, please make sure your student is practicing multiplication and division math facts 0-12. It's important that these facts can be easily recalled.
Parent conferences will be scheduled for our early release days on February 6th and 7th. Conferences will only be scheduled if there is a need. I will contact parents by e-mail. If you don't hear from me but would like to schedule a conference please send me an e-mail.
