The Acceleration Project (TAP) is an innovative consulting firm that provides high-caliber business advice to small businesses, entrepreneurs, municipalities and nonprofits, with a focus on minority and women-owned businesses. TAP leverages the untapped potential of professional women to accelerate local economic development. TAP is a 501c(3), supported by grants and donations in order to serve our clients at a cost well below market.

OUR HISTORY The idea for TAP emerged out of our desire to fix a problem: small businesses struggling to succeed in the face of pressures from the Internet and big box stores. Our Main Streets, our places to gather, work, shop and dine are fighting for survival. We've all seen the unprecedented rise in vacancies and shift in buyer behavior. These forces threaten our community and we knew we could do something about it.

We recognized a great underutilized resource - the local talent pool, many having left their fast paced careers, who had skills that these small businesses could desperately use. With that in mind, we developed a program to identify, train and mobilize this force to provide actionable business advice and in the process keep their skills fresh.

TAP is a dual mission organization

To ignite the vitality of local economies by providing strategic and tactical advice to accelerate small business growth.

To recruit, train and mobilize women professionals to make a meaningful impact in the community while continuing their career development.

OUR CLIENTS include small businesses who need support to bring their businesses to the next level, entrepreneurs who need guidance as they launch their business, municipalities that are looking to provide support to their local economies and nonprofits and foundations that desire assistance tailored to their specific needs. Our consultants guide clients through a broad array of business challenges including strategic planning, goal setting, marketing, financial planning, operations, organization and time management.

“TAP quickly identified our challenges; met us there and then took us to the next level.”

“I know so many people who would benefit from working with TAP. So many people have trouble focusing on what is important and on keeping it simple. You are masterful at that. Working with you feels very productive.”

“I like your structure. You helped me to think about my business in a more effective way, and it doesn’t feel as overwhelming now. You offer me so many new ways to look at things and to move forward.”

OUR SERVICES include the Strategic Advisory Program: consulting for small businesses; Speed Consulting: workshop for a group of small businesses; TAP Capsule: a one-time consultation to address a specific goal; and TAP Project: large scale research and analysis to address a specific need of an organization or foundation. We recruit, train, and mobilize professionals to provide a range of well-structured, accessible, results-oriented services to enable our clients throughout the tri-state area to grow and flourish.

STRATEGIC ADVISORY PROGRAM: our signature offering, where a team of TAP consultants advises a client on business needs. This service includes several structured sessions during which our consultants develop customized tools based on a client’s unique requirements and a detailed Action Plan which includes strategies, tactics and deadlines that the client can use to achieve short-term and long-term goals.

SPEED CONSULTING: workshops offered in a roundtable format are designed to help a community of small businesses. Made possible through partnerships with chambers of commerce and local organizations, participants discuss their challenges and opportunities, receive customized advice and appreciate the opportunity to network and discuss opportunities with other entrepreneurs in their community.

TAP PROJECT: a large scale project or study to address an important business concern or area of inquiry. Example: Working with local government offices and business owners, we completed a thorough analysis of local consumer and business behaviors and perceptions. Using that knowledge, we created an awareness campaign to promote local business and encourage residents to shop and dine where they live.

TAP CAPSULE: for businesses that have a targeted goal in mind, TAP offers a one-time consultation. Challenge and goal must be clearly defined prior to meeting.

OUR TEAM is comprised of highly credentialed consultants with MBAs from leading business schools and various professional degrees. Our consultants have extensive professional experience having worked for Fortune 500 companies and top private firms. Some of which include: Apple, American Express, Bain & Company, Citi, Deloitte & Touche, Goldman Sachs, Kraft, Lazard, and McKinsey. Working on a pro bono basis, our consultants enjoy the opportunity to refine and advance their skills while making a difference in their community. In line with our mission, TAP offers its members networking opportunities, skill-building workshops and events to encourage career development. Many of our consultants have re-entered the paid workforce following their TAP experience with a new sense of confidence in their skills and with a renewed focus on the type of work that interests them most.

"TAP gave me the opportunity to use my business experience and skills in a low risk, supportive, collaborative, results-oriented environment and provided me with current, meaningful projects and results to share with prospective employers. Being part of TAP gave me confidence that the skills obtained earlier in my career were still of value, both to TAP and to prospective employers. It was a great way to re-engage with "the working world" and the experience provided a natural transition back to full-time employment." -- Former TAP Consultant

OUR PARTNERS We partner with organizations, micro-lenders, chambers of commerce and corporations committed to achieving similar goals: boosting local economic development by enabling small businesses to grow and flourish; and empowering professionals to make a meaningful impact in their local community while advancing their skills.
