Reconstruction was the process of the union joining with the south after the end of the civil war. The reconstruction of the civil war helped end slavery but got very brutal for African Americans. This had to happen because the south was in ruins. The south didn't give up and lost everything in the war, with the abolishment of slavery, the south lost lots of money and were very broke.
Two presidential plans: lincons plan was not strict at all, only 10%of us had to say they were sorry. Soon after this plan was made, he was shot in the back of the head by john booth. We couldve came into the union easily if that booth hadn't been an idiot...Johnsons plan was more strict, we had to pay for all of our debts, we had to nullify the succession, and ratify the thirteenth amendment.
Gordon granger was a U.S. Army officer and a Union general during the American Civil War. He went down to Texas to enforce the reconstruction. He went down to Galveston so that he could make sure Texas was following th freedman burea. The freedman burea freed all slaves in Texas. Juneteenth was June 19th and that was the day when slavery was abolished. Even though slaves were free, the south tried to make them as much like slaves as possible.
New Texas governor appointed:
Johnson appointed Edward Clark as governor because he was a southern unionist. Lots of the delegates were confederate leaders and politition. The convention was bias because most people in there were all confederates.
A new constitution:
The constitution of 1866 said that the south would pay their debts, they'd ammend the 13th amendment, and they said they were sorry. Then, they made black codes which made slaves as low as possible in society. Even though they signed to the thirteen amendment, the southern leaders didn't want to to follow it.
Congress takes control:
Congress felt that johnsons plan wasn't working because Johnson wasn't focusing on slaves. Radical republicans were a faction of American politicians within the Republican Party of the United States. The radical republicans gained control when johnsons plan wasn't working. The radical republicans wanted to free the slaves even using force if needed,
Radical reconstruction begins:
After northern voters rejected Johnson’s policies in the congressional elections in late 1866, Republicans in Congress took firm hold of Reconstruction in the South. The following March, again over Johnson’s veto, Congress passed the Reconstruction Act of 1867, which temporarily divided the South into five districts and outlined how they were to be organized. The law also required southern states to ratify the 14th Amendment, which broadened the definition of citizenship, granting “equal protection” of the Constitution to former slaves, before they could rejoin the Union.
Freedmen get the vote:
I have no idea who registered the freedmen to vote, I don't know how many were registered, and don't worry, I know what the kkk is ! The kkk is a racist organization that targets African Americans. The kkk didn't like carpetbaggers and scalawags because they were with the union and the kkk was with the south. In 1879 an African american named bob was captured from his Home by lamelo ball and lonzo ball, two kkk members, he was taken to a lake where he was murdered. The ball brothers were never caught after they fled to Mexico.
With the compromise, the Republicans had quietly given up their fight for racial equality and blacks' rights in the south. In 1877, Hayes withdrew the last federal troops from the south, and the bayonet-backed Republican governments collapsed, thereby ending Reconstruction. White people were upset because they couldn't have slaves anymore. They usually stayed with their owners but now Worked for money.President Ulysses Grant signed the Amnesty act of 1872 into law restoring full civil rights to all but about 500 Confederate sympathizerss.
