Jim crow Laws

One Jim Crow law says that white and colored people will have a separate waiting room and ticket buying place.

Another Jim Crow Law says that a white person cannot marry an African American person.

The Great Depression

In October 1929 the stock market crashed and started the worst economic depression that the U.S.A ever had. Overproduction, foreign competition, and new fabrics that replaced cotton were all factors of the. Stock Market crash. In the 1920s everyone started investing in the stock market hoping for money back so when the stock market crashed a lot of people lost a lot of money. Many African Americans were driven off there farms because of declining prices and jobs in the towns. This relates to Roll of Thunder because the Logans own a farm and they might get driven off.

Abolishment of Slavery

The abolishment of slavery meant a lot to the African Americans. It meant that they could be free and that they were considered people. It meant that they could work and "labor faithfully for reasonable wages" (Emancipation Proclamation). In Roll of Thunder it says “But even teaching us Christianity didn’t make us stop wanting to be free (Taylor 258). That shows that they wanted to be free while they were slaves. When that happened they were very happy that they were finally free.

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." -The Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America"

Lynching happens when a African American person breaks a Jim Crow law. It is basically killing when you don't have a proper trail. In Roll of Thunder the night rider wanted to lynch Papa, Mr. Morrison, and T.J when they didn't really do anything wrong. In Roll of Thunder the men were going to hang TJ, Papa, and Mr. Morrison but they didn't because “Mr. Granger sent word by me that he ain’t gonna stand for no hanging on his place.” (Mildred 344). They wanted to hang him but they didn't because they were on Mr. Grangers land.
