Re-opening The Avon Silverton, CO

In the last week of July, 2016 I received a call from my longtime friend Julia; she, her partner Dan, and other friends were meeting up in Silverton, CO to inspect an old hotel and I was invited. The catch; it was happening that weekend... Having wanted to move to Colorado for sometime; it didn't take me more than a second to decide I was booking a flight from Washington, DC to Durango-La Plata County airport as soon as we got off the phone.

The road to Silverton from both north and south takes you along the scenic and at times white knuckle Million Dollar Highway. The million dollar views are punctuated by sheer cliffs and the lack of guard rails. Of course on my way in to town that first night I didn't know any of this as it was a pitch black night in the San Juan mountains.

The charming town of Silverton captured my heart as it already had of my future business partners Dan and Julia. Over the course of a long weekend their dream became mine as well and before leaving I was asked the simple question, "Are you in?"

Over the proceeding months we put together a business plan, applied for a business loan, and submitted an offer to the existing owner. We determined that the same things that drew us to Silverton would continue to draw other's seeking the beauty of these mountains and the world class backcountry skiing, snowmobiling, ice climbing, rock climbing, mountaineering, mountain biking, hiking, off-roading, and white water paddling that they provide.

We currently have much work to do in restoring this historic location and we think you are going to enjoy what we've come up with. For now here is how we found the Avon upon our fated trip back in July.

Thus begins our adventure to renovate and re-open the historic Avon Hotel in Silverton, CO. We hope that you will join us on our journey and follow along as we bring this iconic location back to it's former glory. Please stop in and stay with us or drop in for a drink; we look forward to sharing our new home with you!
