Summer Internship Recaps

The Buckeyes were busy in the "real world" this summer, participating in internships as part of the Bucks Go Pro program and others outside of Ohio State. The result for all of them was the same: a well-rounded experience that will pay off both now and well into the future.

“Throughout the summer I participated through the Bucks Go Pro 1.0 internship program, working with the Eugene D. Smith Leadership Institute. Throughout my internship I was able to learn new hard skills and build off of the skills I had came into the internship with. Not only was I able to grow professionally, I was able to make connections and network throughout my internship and i could not be more thankful for the Bucks Go Pro program that is offered to us as student athletes!” -Leanne Bough
“This past summer I have the privilege of interning with the BucksGoPro 1.0 program specifically working with the developmental program. I was able to meet and learn about so many different departments and how to have donors interact with student-athletes and how much the people we don’t see daily, do for us student-athletes. My favorite part however was definitely overseeing “Thank You Week”, from start to finish, where we as student-athletes get a chance to say thank you to the university, staff, and other members for the opportunity to wear the Scarlet and Gray!” -Delaney Lawler
“This summer I interned with JLL working in their property management group while also spending some time with the brokerage groups in the Charlotte office. I split my time between office and industrial product types working alongside team members to assist with budget setting, property marketing, lease abstracting, and other daily tasks. This internship was an amazing experience to begin my career in commercial real estate, and the relationships I have made along the way are invaluable.” -Kennedy Fertitta
“This summer I had the opportunity to work for Allison Bowers, LLC as a public relations intern. My role was to create media content, write and edit press releases and do research on social media accounts/ influencers for companies. During the internship, I learned a lot of helpful tips and skills that will be useful for myself in the future. I am so thankful for the opportunity and really enjoyed my summer working with Allison and the rest of the team.” -Julia Dickinson
“This summer I had the opportunity to work for Heartland of Dublin, a nursing home here in Ohio. With my STNA certification that I got last summer, I was able to work as a nurse aide to help residents get the best care possible. This job helped me gain the health care experience hours that are necessary to attend PA school. I will continue to work at this nursing home throughout the school year whenever I am available.” -Emma Goldean
“This summer, I was an intern for Engine Media Inc., a multi-platform media company in the esports and sports betting industry. During my time, I worked on a couple different projects that focused on gathering market research for company growth and new app concepts. These projects consisted of writing and distributing surveys, conducting in-depth interviews, and monitoring different platform analytics. I was able to interact with many people with different roles in the company and learn a lot about these exciting industries.” -Sammy Stone

Mara Hunter

Mara Hunter ’20 on her day of convocation where she took an oath of professionalism.
“Hi there Buckeye Nation! My name is Mara Hunter and I am a recent graduate from the Ohio State University. After my graduation in December of 2020, I took some time off school to work and get ready for my next adventure. Now, I am a current First Year Student at Capital University Law School, located in downtown Columbus. I have begun my classes and am currently spending the majority of time studying. I made sure to stick around Columbus to be able to support the Ohio State Field Hockey Program, because without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I am so excited for this next adventure! See you all around Columbus for some games soon, and Go Bucks!”

Julianna Sweeney

“I recently got a job at a local general practice veterinary office back in Stroudsburg. I get to take patient appointments and carry out diagnostic procedures there. I'm also currently working on finishing my application to veterinary school which is due in the middle of September. Fingers crossed!"

Nikki Trzaska

“Throughout this summer, I’ve been taking full advantage of the free time that I have before I start my job in September at AlphaSights as an associate on their Client Services team. My boyfriend and I got a puppy in early July, so I’ve been training and hanging out with that little guy over the past few months. He’s a 14-week-old bernedoodle named Dewey and he is so sweet. We can’t wait to cheer on the Buckeyes this season!!”

MEET THE NEW BUCKEYES

#2 Hanna Killeen

An Ohio native, Hanna Killeen is staying home and will put on the scarlet and gray this fall as a member of the Ohio State field hockey team. Named the Northeast Ohio Player of the Year in 2020, Killeen was a first-team All-Ohio selection as both a junior and senior at Hudson High School. Her play made Hudson a winner as the Explorers were state runners-up in both 2018 and 2020. In addition to a state runner-up finish, Hudson also won three NEOFH league championships and was a district runner-up in 2017 and 2019.

#3 Claudia Thomas

Thomas was Ms. Field Hockey in the state of Kentucky and a Top 10-ranked player nationally by Max Field Hockey. But those individual accomplishments are just part of the story – Thomas also was a winner. She helped Christian Academy of Louisville win a state championship as a freshman in 2017 and finish runner-up in 2019. On the international stage, Thomas has played for the United States U17 National Team, USA Rise National Team and the 2019 Germany Tour. Just last summer, she competed in the Young Women’s National Championship at the Virginia Beach Regional Training Center.

#5 Olivia Zetterval

Zettervall was a winner at Cape Henry Collegiate. Three times teams that she played on won state championships and three times she was a Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools first-team selection. An all-around athlete, Zettervall also played soccer, basketball and ran indoor track at Cape Henry Collegiate. On the soccer field, she was an all-state honoree at goalie. And she still found time to be an excellent student as she was a member of the National Honor Society.

#18 Hallie Brost

An All-State and All-Region selection while at the Collegiate School, Brost scored 32 career goals and added 22 assists for 86 points. Her play helped the Collegiate School reach the state and conference finals during her sophomore season of 2018. #34 Jenna Zunic

Zunic, from Johnson City, N.Y., was a five-year varsity letterwinner at Maine-Endwell High School and was part of back-to-back New York Class A state title-winning teams. In 2017, her squad was the state runner-up, meaning she played in the championship game three years in a row. An all-state and all-region performer, Zunic was also a New York State Championship All-Tournament Team selection in 2018 and 2019.

Summer hockey

The Young Women’s National Championship returned after a one-year hiatus and it has a double dose of Buckeye representation.

Freshman Claudia Thomas, a native of Louisville, Ky. and graduate of Christian Academy of Louisville, competed for Team Unity while associate head coach Kate Lipton was the head coach for Team Brave.

“Given the opportunity to compete in the Young Women’s National Championship, I was able to grow and develop my skills and play at the highest level of hockey. This experience has not only made me a better player, but a well-rounded person. It taught me to always expect the best from myself and from everyone around me. Being one of the younger ones at this tournament it pushed me to fight adversity and still have confidence in myself. Overall, I am very grateful for this opportunity and hope to take the things I learned back to Buckeye Varsity Field.” // Claudia Thomas
