Sin and Temptation A Bible Study

In referring to problems with sin, we hear the common phrases, "I keep making the same mistake," or "I need to kick this bad habit," or "I just fell into sin," or "No one's perfect." With these phrases running through our minds and mouths, do we really understand what sin is? Is sin one of those annoying habits we keep going back to? It is that roadblock the enemy keeps throwing in our way?

Read Genesis 3:14-19 & Romans 1:18-25.

What is God's perspective of sin?

Sin is a choice to rebel against God.

The devil never makes us do it! We sin when we feed our evil desires and then make the choice to turn against the most perfect, loving One in the universe. How foolish it is to sin!

Read James 1:14-15. Describe how sin comes about and the ultimate end of sin.

There are many categories and lists of sins in the Bible. It is clear from these passages that sin always has devastating consequences on our relationship with God, others and ourselves.

Read through the following lists of sins.

• Mark 7:20-23

• Rom. 1:28-32

• 1 Cor. 6:9-10

• Gal. 5:19-21

• Eph. 4:29 – 5:5

• 1 Tim. 1:9-11

• Rev. 21:8

Do you see yourself in any of the passages above?

Why do we sin?

Because we love it more than God. When we obey the call of sin, we reveal our heart's loyalty to it. Jesus said, "Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching" (John 14:23 NIV). So, it is our obedience that reveals our love. When we obey our sinful flesh, we show that we love our sin.

Identify the sin. Confess it. Don't excuse it. 1 Cor. 10:13 says that God always provides a pathway for escape. Admit to God that you didn't take his way out.

Repent. In your words and actions tell God that you will not go back to that sin again. Then prepare to overcome by removing tempting obstacles.

Keep in step. Gal. 5:16 says, "So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature." (NIV) Fill yourself with the Words of God. Listen for the Spirit's gentle, protecting direction in your life. Respond to his conviction in the moment. Fill your life with worship and thanksgiving. When your spirit, soul and body are filled with worship and the Word of God, temptation does not have room to grow.
