Dr. Mark Hyman & Dr. Sheryl Neuman

Ask anyone who knows Mark and Sheryl and they will tell you that they are doers.

While both are extremely accomplished and have active careers, they are constantly involved with chessed and charity work. They are strong believers in building educational institutions, and, as two of YULA’s staunchest advocates, they have played a major role in YULA’s growth and development over the last several years.

Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, after graduating from University of Michigan with a degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Dr. Hyman moved to Los Angeles to pursue his medical degree at UCLA School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency at UCLA in General Internal Medicine and served as an Associate Professor on the clinical faculty at UCLA for over 30 years. Dr. Hyman is a nationally recognized disability expert. He is a sought-after lecturer, who has authored numerous writings in prestigious medical journals and books. In 2009, WebMD selected Dr. Hyman for its annual “Health Heroes” award. The City of Los Angeles also recognized his involvement with the LA Police Department and his contribution to developing police arrest procedures. Currently, Dr. Hyman, an internist, heads HymanHealth, a practice that has been serving the Los Angeles Community for over 25 years.

Dr. Sheryl Neuman also received her medical and public health degrees at UCLA and worked as the director of the Employee Services at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. She currently works for Accepted, as a medical school admissions consultant. As an avid learner herself, she has seen the impact of inspirational Judaic teachers on both herself and her children and has sought to promote excellence in Jewish education by becoming a board member of the Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education.

Mark and Sheryl are proud parents of YULA Alumni: Ari ‘09, Micah ’14, Jesse ‘16, Noah ’18. In addition to being parents at YULA, Mark and Sheryl have been active participants in many aspects of the school. Dr. Hyman currently serves as a member the Executive Board on the YULA Boys High School Board of Directors. He is also a member of the YULA Capital Campaign Committee and has been active in the development of the endowment program and school strategic planning. Over the years he has also been involved in the Admissions, Development, and Trustees Committees. Sheryl was instrumental in helping form the YULA Robotics Team and assisted in coordinating and hosting competitions and events. They have also opened their home to many YULA events.

It is for this generosity of spirit and commitment to Jewish education, and in particular for their enduring support of YULA, that we honor them at our Trustees Event this year.

Rabbi Ouriel Hazan graduated from YULA in 2000, graduated from Yeshiva University, and completed his master’s degree in Jewish Education at the Azrieli School of Education in 2013. For over 13 years he has been an educator. At Maimonides Academy, Rabbi Hazan taught for nine years and now serves as the Assistant Principal; and after working at Camp Moshava Alevy for the last four years, he will now serve as the Assistant Director. In keeping with his community service, Rabbi Hazan has been the director of youth groups and programs for several shuls. At YULA, Rabbi Hazan ran the Drama Department for ten years, where he helmed 20 sensational productions; and he has taken YULA students from both YULA campuses to the AIPAC Policy Conference for the last three years. He has also been the Faculty Advisor for the YULA Israel Advocacy Club. Rabbi Hazan gained much of his experience as an advisor for NCSY shabbatonim for many years; perhaps most important, that is also where he met his wife Gaby, with whom he has two children, Eliyahu and Cochava or Coco.
