Art lets Edna express herself. "She felt in it satisfaction of a kind which no other employment afforded her"
Cigars are a symbol because back then, men were the ones who smokes cigars. By society's standards, women were not allowed to smoke them.
Music makes Edna emotional throughout the story.
"She had wanted to swim far out, where no woman had swam before."- chapter 10
The lady in black symbolizes Edna's depression and how she is stuck listening to what society has to say. "The lady in black was reading her morning devotions on the porch of a neighboring bathhouse. Two young lovers were exchanging their hearts' yearnings beneath the children's tent, which they had found unoccupied"
The lovers are a symbol for young romance, and passion for love throughout the story.
Sleep helped Edna escape the world and her husband. "She was overcome with sleep, and answered him with little half utterances. He thought it very discouraging that his wife, who was the sole object of his existence, evinced so little his conversation"- Page 47
