#PUSDBacktoSchool August 22, 2018

On August 22, 2018, over 36,000 students headed back to school in the Poway Unified School District. While some of our campuses, like Abraxas High, Black Mountain Academy, and Valley Elementary, had already started, most of PUSD kicked off the school year on Wednesday. From a "boo-hoo breakfast" for parents and a kindergarten welcome walk to freshman welcome tunnels to rockin' first day assemblies, each school had its own unique traditions to make students and staff feel welcome. A spirit of excitement and anticipation mixed with nerves and bittersweet emotions made for an eventful first day. We asked Team PUSD to tag photos with #PUSDBacktoSchool when posting photos, and we are excited to share them with you. If you are viewing on your mobile device, turn it horizontally for the best viewing experience. You can also click on smaller photos to enlarge them. ENJOY!!!

Superintendent Dr. Marian Kim-Phelps toured several campuses, including Poway High: "The first day of school is truly one of the best days of the year. It was so exciting to be out on our campuses and in classrooms as our students and staff started a brand new year. I feel so lucky to be the Superintendent of this amazing district."

News crews from across San Diego came to Poway Unified to cover our first day.

Finally, have you seen PUSD's Back to School Music Video, to the tune of "This is Me" from The Greatest Showman? We created the video to show that PUSD is a District where we believe every student can succeed, a place where our kids can thrive and learn to be their best selves, a place where diversity is valued and dreams are achieved. We hope you are inspired by our awesome and talented young people. The video was filmed by PUSD student video interns, under the direction of Communications Director Christine Paik.
