Saloman August Andree An EXPEDITION that went wrong

S.A. Andree and his partener attempted to reach the North Pole by a hot air balloon. In 1897, Andree and two companions rose into the clouds above the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. But the attempt covered only 475 kilometers in 65 hours of undirected flight.

But...after encountering a storm and suffering badly, Andree was forced to land the balloon on pack ice.

It took almost two months of dragging their supplies and eating polar bears before they finally reached White Island. Even after they found refuge they died of ingesting parasites from the polar bear flesh they ate over their journey
