National History Day Project

On Friday December 20th, the Baker Middle School eighth grade social studies students presented their National History Day projects in the Media Center.

Each year more than half a million students participate in the creation of National History Day projects. Some of the projects are selected for national competition. Baker students participated this year choosing a historical topic related to the annual theme. The 2018-2019 National History Day theme is Triumph & Tragedy in History. Students were asked to select their Triumph & Tragedy research topic based on its relevance to the past and its broad application to world, national, or state history. The National History Day project is an exciting way for students to evaluate how historical sources, events, and developments were shaped by unique circumstances of time and place.

The Baker Social Studies and Language Arts departments partnered with the Media Center Specialist to help students conduct primary and secondary source research for the completion of their National History Day projects. Students had the opportunity to analyze and interpret sources, draw conclusions about the significance of their topic, complete a research paper and present their work in one of the ways listed below. Overall, the students did an amazing job! Some of our student's work will be chosen to represent Baker at the Troy National History Day Showcase early next year. Please scroll through the pictures below to engage in a gallery walk of the exhibit.

Veteran's History Project

In the spring of 2019, in conjunction with the 8th grade US History Civil War Unit (and Memorial Day) 8th grade Baker students are going to take part in our version of the Veteran's History Project. The VHP is a program run in conjunction with the Library of Congress. Students will be placed in pairs/groups/individuals and will create questions and conduct an oral history interview with a veteran that served in the US armed forces in any capacity. A copy of that interview will be sent to the Library of Congress and will be part of the permanent historical record, so kids will leave 8th grade having actually made history! THIS IS WHERE WE NEED YOUR HELP!

In order to conduct the oral history interviews, we need veterans to interview! I would love to give as many veterans as possible the opportunity to tell their story and have it documented. If you are yourself a veteran, have a family member that is, or know someone that is, please have them get in touch with me using the link below to a contact form! I will then generate a list and set up times for them to come in and tell their story! The more stories we can tell the better! If you have any questions, please contact Mr. MacIntosh at zmacintosh@troy.k12.mi.us

Bobcats of the Month

Winter 1 Sports

This week the Boys Basketball teams continued their season playing tough games against Reuther and Smith.
  • Monday's game against Reuther was a tough match up for both teams. The 7th and 8th grade teams lost but showed tremendous effort, battling back in the 2nd half.
  • Wednesday's game against Smith was an exciting rematch. The Bobcats had home court advantage but could not capitalize on it for the win. Both teams lost and the 8th graders led the game into the 4th quarter, losing the game at the free throw line. The final score was 34 to 31. Mitchel Young scored a season high of 16 points.

This Week at Baker
