The most popular kind of theatrical performance was a vaudeville. This was an inexpensive variety show that contained acts based on racial and ethnic humor. These first appeared in the 1870's.

Minstrel was a type of show that contained white actors that imitated "black stereotypes." These shows were in the 1840's, and began to lose popularity when vaudeville gained it's popularity.
