GRADE PLACEMENT PROCEDURES FOR 2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR

With the end of the school year fast approaching, I would like to share our procedures for moving students to their next grade level teacher for the 2018-2019 school year. We use a comprehensive procedure to determine grade/teacher placement. The process is outlined below:

1. Teachers will fill out a student profile sheet on each student in his/her class. The profile sheet will allow teachers to identify each student’s strengths and needs.

2. A team consisting of the grade level teachers, principal, and other pertinent staff such as the reading specialist, special education personnel, and/or ELL teacher will meet to place students into classes. The class lists will be constructed so that each class is relatively equal with regards to gender, academic abilities, learning needs, and social-emotional developmental levels.

3. A team consisting of the specials teachers and other pertinent staff will meet to review the class lists and make any necessary changes.

4. Parents and students will be informed of the placement for the school year in late August.

Occasionally, parents have concerns regarding the needs of their child or specific circumstances. If there is a concern, parents may bring a letter to my attention (NO EMAILS) with information regarding their child’s learning style and specific educational needs by no later than Friday, April 27. Please do not make specific teacher requests as we do not accept requests. Please be aware that once classroom assignments are emailed in late August, changes will not be made. We feel confident that with our current classroom assignment process, each student will be placed in a classroom that will allow him/her to have a successful year.

MICHIGAN STUDENT TEST OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRESS (M-STEP)

Each spring our third, fourth, and fifth graders participate in the standardized state assessment, the M-STEP. The purpose of this assessment is to: 1) Provide state, district, and building data to determine the effectiveness of our programming; and 2) Provide parents and teachers with individual student performance data. Third through fifth grade students will take an online English Language Arts (ELA) and Math assessment on their iPads. In addition, fifth grade will be taking a Science Field Test and a two part Social Studies assessment. All testing will take place in the morning.

The testing dates for fifth grade assessments will be Mon 4/16, Wed 4/18, Thu 4/19, Tue 4/24

The testing dates for fourth grade assessments will be Thu 5/10, Thu 5/17

The testing dates for third grade assessments will be Mon 4/30, Wed 5/2

**** **** **** HELP WANTED IN THE LUNCH ROOM **** **** ****

We are in need of noon aides to work in the lunch room. Hours are 11:25am - 1:10pm. Please contact the office if you are interested. (248) 823-3500.

**** **** **** HELP WANTED IN FOOD SERVICE **** **** ****

The Troy Schools Food Service Department, which is contracted by the Sodexo Corporation, is gearing up to expand our Food Service Staff by seeking friendly people willing to fill various vacancies that are responsible for providing lunches to the students of the Troy School District. Not to worry if you haven’t had previous experience, as “on the job” training will be provided!

Depending on the school, the hours would primarily be during the middle of the day and would range from 3 to 4 hours a day. And you would be earning some extra money while your students are in school! We are especially seeking elementary cooks, which does have more hours. So, come join our team by calling 248-823-5089, or email Nicole Gervais at ngervais@troy.k12.mi.us, or come into the office at the Service Center, 4420 Livernois, Troy 48098 for an application. I look forward to hearing from you!

Gayle M. Moran, Director, General Manager Sodexo Corporation
