Mendip Parish Forum Events and Dates

The Mendip Parish Forum is for clerks, chairs, elected members and community representatives from across Mendip. The forums are held quarterly in the Council Chamber at the Mendip District Council offices from 6:00pm with the main agenda items beginning at 6:30pm.

Forum Dates for 2020 are below :

Parish Forum Development Workshop 10th March 2020

At the Parish Forum on 23rd January, Andrew Knight ( Chair of Berkley Parish Council ) and I , presented a vision and ambition, including draft proposals, on how we could build a strong, resilient working partnership between Mendip District Council and Parishes. We have been working on these with direction and representation from both Parish and District Councillors.

To develop these and start to turn the ambition into reality ,we would like to invite you to a workshop on 10th March from 6-8:30pm in the Council Chamber at MDC . If you are interested , just turn up !

Our ambition and vision is set out below. Watch out for future correspondence about the workshop on 10th March !

Working together on the things that matter to you - providing a central voice for Mendip parish Councils and support for them to extend and strengthen their communities

Sharing good practise and learning, reflecting local concern, developing sustainable futures at a local level

Influencing policy, shaping and delivering project and services that improve the lives for Mendip residents

Co-ordinate effective local environmental stewardship Strategies

The proposal includes an overall steering group and a number of working groups, working together on the things that matter to you. The Steering Group would set the overall direction and management of the Forum including identifying training needs, setting the agendas and developing strategic partnerships and working relationships. There were some suggestions for the working groups including footpaths and cycle paths ;trees and hedgerows and water courses . Come along it's up to you !

Mendip Business Awards 2020 Launch Night

Past and present sponsors, previous winners and local Chambers of Commerce representatives were greeted at Pillars 501 - Shepton Mallet’s brand new Gin Bar - for an evening of networking, nibbles and drinks Monday night to celebrate the launch of the 2020 Mendip Business Awards.

Local businesses who attended the launch event included Ayton Global Research, Netitide, Knight’s Fish & Chip Shop, LOAF Bakery, Heart Radio Somerset, Melhuish & Saunders, The Swan Hotel, Strode College, The Bath & West Showgrounds, TelePA, Luxe & Twine, Melhuish & Saunders, Red Berry Recruitment, Wainwrights & Chris Young Opticians.

Businesses can now enter the awards until the closing date of Friday 27 March 2020. We look forward to welcoming applications from businesses across the district to celebrate the wealth of successful enterprises in Mendip.

Finalists and sponsors of the awards will attend the awards ceremony on Wednesday 27 May at the Royal Bath and West Showground.

Climate Emergency – Mendip Public Drop in Events

Are you concerned about climate change? Do you want to help reduce Mendip’s carbon footprint?

Mendip District Council will be holding two, evening drop-in events where you will get a chance to have your say about our climate emergency plans and the actions we have identified to support the district’s journey to be carbon neutral by 2030.

Frome Town Hall – Tuesday 3rd March

Wells Town Hall – Thursday 19th March

Both events will be held between 6-9pm

You will be able to respond to our plans via a survey on our website two weeks prior to the event. If you are unable to attend one of the events, please visit our website to submit your feedback on our climate emergency plans by visiting the survey.

Changes to the Planning Enforcement Policy:

Updates and information on current investigations:

Please note that the Enforcement Team are no longer able to provide updates or information about any ongoing investigations. Under the General Data Protection Regulations the Council has a duty to protect the privacy of the person who is the subject of the complaint as we do for the person reporting the complaint. Therefore, we are no longer able to provide any updates or information about the matter during the course of our investigation. Such information is also likely to be exempt from release under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. A summary of our findings will be provided to the complainant once the investigation has been concluded.

Charity of the Year 2019 Grand Total

Throughout 2019, Mendip Council staff have been baking, running, quizzing and cycling hard to raise as much money as possible for their 2019 Charity of the Year, CLIC Sargent.

Their hard work paid off and they have raised an incredible £4130.80!

Charity of the Year 2020 - Time is Precious

Time is Precious is a voluntary run charity which has been running since 2011. It was set up by Neil and Nicky Halford in memory of their son Ben who sadly died from cancer in 2010. He was cared for at Bristol Children’s Hospital, Frenchay and RUH children’s ward for almost four years.

The aim of the charity is to help create a more comfortable and relaxed atmosphere for children and their families in hospital or at home.

Mendip staff will be working with the charity throughout 2020 to raise as much money as possible.

The Shape Mendip Lottery is a weekly online lottery created to support local causes in Mendip. Tickets are only £1 per week and 60% of your ticket price will go to local causes! To find out more about how it works, the causes you can support and how to sign-up, visit the website below.

Community Funding

Spark can support groups to get themselves ready to apply for funding; writing a constitution, getting any relevant policies and procedures in place and ensuring you have the right management structure.

We have a funding database to search for any new funding opportunities and for groups who need a bit more support we have recently employed a funding officer. For more information email Sharon.Hale@sparksomerset.org.uk.

THE CLARA E BURGESS CHARITY - Grants generally up to £5,000 for UK registered charities carrying out projects that benefit children and young people.

Application deadline: none – applications may be made at any time.

The Charity does not maintain a website. Further information is, however, available on the Charity Commission website.

Applications may be made in writing at any time, and should provide:

  • Background details about the applicant,
  • Details of the project they want funding for
  • A breakdown of the funding costs, and
  • A copy of the applicant’s annual accounts.

COMIC RELIEF COMMUNITY FUND – Capacity building grants up to £500 and Project Grants up to £4,000 for small grassroots groups and charities in England to help them develop their organisation or to deliver projects that fit with Comic Relief's four strategic themes (see below).

THE ERNEST HECHT CHARITABLE FOUNDATION - Grants for UK registered charities in England and Wales that are helping people improve their quality of life through art, healthcare, literature, music and theatre.

Application deadline: none – applications may be made at any time.

THE ADAMSON TRUST - Grants for individual families, UK charities and voluntary and community organisations for holidays or respite breaks for disabled children aged 3 up to 18 years with physical, mental, or emotional impairments.

Application deadline: Tuesday 31 March 2020.

THE RAYNE FOUNDATION - Grants up to £20,000 for UK charities and not-for-profit organisations working with disadvantaged people in the arts, health and wellbeing, education, and those that cover social issues. Applications for projects that support young people’s mental health, arts as a tool to achieve social change and improving the quality of life for carers and older people are particularly welcomed.

Application deadline: none – applications may be made at any time.

SWIMATHON FOUNDATION COMMUNITY GRANTS - Grants up to £2,500 for not-for-profit organisations to help promote swimming in local communities across the UK.

Application deadline: Friday 13 March 2020.

ARMED FORCES DAY 2020 GRANTS - Grants up to £10,000 to enable UK organisations and individuals host an event within two weeks of Armed Forces Day, which falls on Saturday 27 June 2020.

Application deadline: Friday 27 March 2020.

To apply, applicants are required to register their event on the Armed Forces Day website. Once registered, applicants will receive a confirmation email which will include a link to the application form, within three working days.

THE RESOURCE ACTION FUND – Small scale grants up to £100,000 for businesses and not-for-profit organisations in England to reduce and better managing waste in the areas of food, plastics, textiles, recycling infrastructure and litter.

Application deadline: Monday 25 or Tuesday 26 March 2020 depending on the scheme

THE WOODWARD CHARITABLE TRUST CHILDREN’S SUMMER PLAY SCHEME GRANTS - Grants up to £1,000 for small UK registered charities providing locally based summer play schemes for children aged between 5 and 16.

Application deadline: Friday 3rd April 2020.

THE GOLDSMITHS’ COMPANY CHARITY – Small grants up to £5,000 and Large Grants up to £30,000 for UK registered charities and charitable organisations for a range of causes, but specifically organisations working with young people, the elderly and the resettlement of prisoners.
