Thesis: Throughout the Alchemist the idea that everyone has a Personal Legend and they can achieve it through believing in themselves, having courage, and having patience is stressed over and over. You can also see these concepts though an ordinary construction worker, a soon to be royal, and a volcano love story.

Detail: “And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it." (Coelho 24)

Commentary: Santiago had to believe in his personal legend and really want it to achieve it. Similarly, when Emmett realized to be the special all he had to do was believe in himself.

Detail: “People are afraid to pursue their most important dreams, because they feel that they don’t deserve them, or that they’ll be unable to achieve them” (Coelho 134).

Commentary: Santiago had courage to pursue his dreams and work towards his personal legend. Similarly, Edmund shows courage, though he is scared, to protect other from being turned to stone.

Detail: In his pursuit of the dream, he was being constantly subjected to tests of his persistence and courage. So he could not be hasty, nor impatient. If he pushed forward impulsively, he would fail to see the signs and omens left by God along his path (Coelho 92).

Commentary: Santiago was taught to be patient on his journey to his treasure. Comparably, in the love story of two volcanoes, each volcano has to have patience while they wait for their love to come some day.

Conclusion: The Alchemist can relate to our everyday lives in our search for our personal legends. While on your journey experience the wonders of the world, but never forget the drops of oil.
