Clarence Hudson White 1871 - 1925

He was known from subtle images of women and children and teacher of photography. a first he worked as an accountant in his father's grocery business. He taught himself the art of photography despite of limited time and finances. He didn't have any money for trainings and courses, it was really challenging for him. He photographed his family members or friends. He was choosing early mornings or late afternoon and evenings watching on better light. because of the limited finances, he could to make only eight photograph per month, but in very good quality. Within a few years he started becoming the famous and appearing for the public attention. It was in 1898 at the First Philadelphia Photographic Salon.

Pictorialism - it was a fine art in photography which appeared in 1902 and one of the founders was just Clarence H. White. The pictorialism highlighted rather tonality, composition and documentation of reality. A few years he lived as a traveling portraitist.

Pictorialism was very poular in 19th and 20th centuries. The photographers using this style rather "create" not record the image. The pictures was not very sharp, rather blurred and in brown more often than im black and white.

In 1916 Clearance together with his friends has founded the Pictorial Photographers of America (PPA). This organisation promoted pictorialism, sponsored exhibitions and published a journal. During the 1920th pictorialism started to changed the style of photography in bringing "pluralism to pictorialism".

Techniques using by pictorialism photographers

Pictorial photographers began by taking an ordinary glass-plate or film negative. Some of the used special lens to soften image. They used variety of papers and chemical processes. Yhe most commonly used pictorial processes are:

  • bromoil process,
  • carbon print,
  • cyanotype,
  • gum bichromate,
  • oil print process,
  • platinum print
