Veteran's Day Celebration 2018

Forestry Woodsman's Team Places 3rd at Cradle Competition

MCC's Woodsman's Team placed 3rd overall out of 10 schools competing at this year's annual John G. Palmer Woodsman's meet, held in the Pisgah National Forest. Also known as the Cradle of Forestry, it is so-called because it is the birthplace of scientific forest management.

MCC has always performed very well in the men's events in these competitions, but because the team sometimes suffers from a dearth of female competitors, it cannot earn points for the women's events. Thanks to Maegan Byrd, Nikki Hurley, and Megan Strong, this year was different, and the Woodsman's Team made their best showing in several years.

Maegan Byrd took 2nd place in archery, Nikki took 4th in women's bolt split and 2nd in women's single buck, and Megan Strong took 2nd in women's axe throw. In the partner events, Nikki and Maegan took 4th in the women's crosscut saw.

In other events, Wesley Bodenheimer took 2nd in the standing block chop, 1st place in the men's chainsaw, and 2nd in men's horizontal speed chop. Ryan Egerter placed 4th in the men's horizontal speed chop, and took 1st in the men's single buck, while Cole Reynolds took 3rd place in the men's pole climb.

Gavin Auten and Ryan Egerter took 4th in dendrology, a team event. Gavin Hailey and Jordan Hancox placed 3rd in men's crosscut saw. Gavin and Maegan Byrd also took 3rd in the Jack and Jill crosscut saw event. The team made a great showing and expects to do even better next year! Please enjoy some photographic highlights of the meet (below), courtesy of Edward Terrell, a second year forestry student (and professional photographer!).

Yourspace will return on Monday, November 26, after the Thanksgiving holiday break. Happy Thanksgiving from Yourspace!
