The west Nile virus is a RNA type virus

The Host

Can cause a fatal neurological disease in humans, but birds are the natural hosts of West Nile virus.

What causes this?

WNV is mostly transmitted to people through the bites of infected mosquitoes.

How long?

Symptoms of mild disease will generally last a few days. Symptoms of severe disease may last several weeks, although neurological effects may be permanent.


Symptoms include fever, headache, tiredness, and body aches, nausea, vomiting, occasionally with a skin rash and swollen lymph glands.


The WNV often involving hospitalization,but no vaccine is available for humans.


Vaccines have been developed for horses. Treatment is supportive veterinary practices for animals infected with a viral agent.

Estimated at 89.6% survival rate (48% to 84%) WNV death rate


-West Nile virus can cause a fatal neurological disease in humans.

-However, approximately 80% of people who are infected will not show any symptoms.
