The Telegraph

The telegraph was the most significant impact on west ward expansion because you could communicate more quickly, you didn't have to be face to face, you could send information to different locations, and you could communicate long distances.

This Change affected people directly. People could now communicate a lot easier and faster. The telegraph was also used at war. Abraham Lincoln was the first president to communicate on the spot with his officers on the battlefield. In 1861, over a million messages were sent out to the battlefield through the telegraph. Producers and suppliers also could communicate WAY faster.

It also affected the country. The telegraph encouraged people to move west. You could still communicate and keep in touch by using the telegraph. You didn't have to be face to face.

The Telegraph was invented in 1837. It was created so people didn't have to be face to face to communicate and so you could communicate long distance. During this time, the railroad was invented in the 1830's. The telegraph lines were placed on the railroad tracks.

This change affected both North and South, but mostly the west. It affected westward expansion by encouraging people to move west because people could still communicate.
