Lough Key Triathlon Club May/June 2016
Welcome to this months edition of the club newsletter. This was a very busy month with a local and international feel to our members activities. We are now fully into the triathlon season with the return of open water swimming. Also we loads of events with everything from Ironman, full triathlons and local 8k races to report on.
Congratulations again to Kenny and Donnacha on their amazing performances in Lanzarote. While there was a small amount of disappointment for Donnacha with missing out on Kona qualification by one place this shouldn't take away from his and Kenny outstanding times on the most difficult Ironman course in the world!
We also look ahead to our aquathon event at the end of June and the Challange Galway race also with a big crew gearing up for this event.
Important Dates For Your Diary
- June 29th Lough Key Triathlon Club Aquathon
- July 16th Two Provinces Sprint Triathlon (Club Race of the Year)
- September 4th Lough Key Triathlon
Race report: Well done to John Benson who recovered well from his exploits up Sheemore the previous weekend to put in a great time in the first of the Belpark Duathlon series in Dublin. Shout out also to local man Keith Scheiner who finished just ahead of John competing for the Belpark club. Well done lads.
Tribesman Tri Series
Once again we can report some fantastic performances from Siobhan and Tojo. They travelled over to Claregalway for the first race of the Tribesman Triathlon series. On what must have been very tricky conditions with all the heavy rain Siobhan added to her haul of podium finishes in 2016 with a second place finish. Tojo finished a super 21st overall just one second behind Siobhan!! Great work again to you both.
While our Ironmen grabbed the headlines on Saturday the 21st there was plenty of other activities going on by members that weekend as triathlon season is really kicking off. We had John Creegan representing us over in the Slateman Triathlon in Wales which looks an amazing event with some channelling running by the looks of it.. mighty work John
Members Mini Aquathon
A fantastic club event devised by Finbarr and definitely to be repeated. Short swim followed by a 3k run and a lovely cup a after. Everyone really enjoyed and this was especially good for those new to open water swimming.
ETU Triathlon European Games
Massive congrats to Tojo who today competed and finished 5th in his race in the Lisbon ETU Triathlon European Championship. Winning an international call up in any sport is a fantastic achievement and we all in Lough Key send on our congrats to Tojo.
Roscommon Race Series
Race report: With the summer season really kicking in we have members competing in events almost every weekend and Michelle Lannon put in yet another fantastic run this time in the Roscommon race series 8k. Michelle was second lady home in a fantastic time of 31.28
Kempinski Race Series Ghana
We are fast becoming an international triathlon club with this report from Ghana! Andrew Brennan was first home in the Ghana Triathlon continuing his fantastic form in this event! Well done andrew and we all look forward to trying to keep up with Andy on the bike for the summer!
Lough Cutra Castle, Gort
More than 1,000 people competed across eight separate races at the Castle Triathlon Series race in Lough Cutra near Gort, Co Galway on Sunday. Earlier in the morning however, the picture could not have been more different, as a heavy blanket of fog laid over the lake, bringing visibility down to just a few metres.
After initially delaying the race in a bid to see if this fog would clear, race officials were left with no choice but to cancel the swim leg of the half Ironman distance due to safety considerations.
However soon the fog began to lift and all 15 Lough Key club members competing got to do the swim. We had a fantastic crew doing different distances from Olympic down with brilliant performances by all in what turned into a beautiful but very warm day. Well done all and special mention to Heather Maxwell on her first open water triathlon... only the beginning Heather!!
Watch the below video and see if you recognise anyone!!!!
