The Weston Weekly August 13, 2021

Hancock County Library News ~ Over the summer, 43 students from Weston Elementary participated in the Hancock County Public Library’s summer reading club. Twenty-six students completed the program by reading five or more hours in June and July. I included a list of these students below. Thank you for your help in promoting this literacy effort at our school.

School Dismissal Manager

Families should have received an email from School Dismissal Manager on Monday. Please take a few moments to get your account set up. Please make sure to check the default setting is correct or change it to the correct default. If your student has different transportation depending on the day of the week, please provide that information by choosing weekday defaults. More information is provided below.

Attendance Clarification

I would like to clear up some confusion on the attendance changes coming from the state. If your student is asked quarentine they will be coded in PowerSchool attendance as VIRT- COV -- Virtual Temporary due to COVID -19. This is the coding that the State of Indiana Dept. of Education has asked us to use.

Please understand that only staff members see the attendance information. Also, it does not necessarily mean that your student has COVID-19, it just means that your student is absent due to a COVID-19 situation.

If your student is sent home for an extended period of time, your teacher will work with you so they can stay connected and working while they are gone.

If you have any questions, or concerns, please do not hesitate to call our main office at 317-462-1492.

Mum Sale Fundraiser

Happy Friday, Weston Families! This school year’s PTO Mum Sale will begin this coming Monday, August 16th. Your child will be bringing home a packet that day that includes a flyer with information, an order form, an envelope to return the order form and payment in, and a sheet of pickup reminders for you to give to anyone that buys mums from you. You can contact us with any questions at ptowestonelementary@gmail.com. Thank you for your support!

Sports, Clubs & Community Involvement

Campers who wear their camp shirt will be allowed free admission and will be recognized between the JV and Varsity games. JV will start at 6:00 pm. We look forward to seeing you there!

Social Work Corner ~ Mrs. Miller

Each month at Weston Elementary, we highlight a different character trait. Students learn about the trait through morning announcements, activities, and role modeling throughout the building. As we talk about teamwork during August, we will also highlight associated characteristics involved, such as ways to be a good communicator, collaboration with others, a willingness to share new ideas, being open to feedback, and demonstrating initiative. Your child will internalize these characteristics when they are also reinforced at home. You might share a compliment such as “I liked how you looked at me while we were talking” OR “You really showed teamwork when we were working together to fix your bike”.

Shoes & Clothing ~ Journey Bags is a community organization that provides free new and gently used clothing for children in need. A week’s worth of clothing & underwear is provided, as are some hygiene products. Families may contact Tammy Caldwell at 812-473-6451 or Tcaldwell631@gmail.com

If you are in need of school supplies for your child(ren), please contact Mrs. Terry Miller @ Weston Elementary. She will gather needed supplies for your child and get them to your child on the first day of school. Mrs. Miller’s email address is temiller@gcsc.k12.in.us.
